Taiwan won another gold medal at the 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup, this time in the recurve mixed team event. Archers Lei Chien-ying and Tang Chih-chun defeated their U.S. rivals in a nail-biter of a match that was extended to shootoffs. The team’s victory was sealed by Lei, who shot a perfect 10 in her last shot, allowing the team to reach the top spot.
Lei Chien-ying and Tang Chih-chun were in full focus in the recurve mixed team final shootoff, where it all came down to Lei’s final shot. She stayed focused despite the pressure, and got a 10, defeating the U.S. team and winning gold for Taiwan.
The event, held in Medellin in Colombia, was Stage 4 of the 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup. Team Taiwan made its way to the top with ease, that is, until going up against the U.S. in the final. The team started off rough, with an 8-point for their first shot, placing the U.S. in the lead. But they quickly took over, with seven 10-point shots in the second and third round. Then in the fourth round, team U.S. caught up with Taiwan, triggering a shootoff.
The U.S.’ Jack Williams shot the first arrow of the shootoff, scoring 10 points. Then, Tang returned with a 10 himself. Then, it was Casey Kaufhold’s turn, scoring a solid 9. It all fell down to Lei’s last shot.
With a centered 10, Lei helped Taiwan defeat their opponents 20-19, winning the gold. Already, Taiwan has won seven medals at the event, with three golds, one silver and two bronzes in recurve and one gold in the composite mixed team event. Currently, Taiwan stands at No. 4 on the ranking. The next and final stage of the World Cup will be held in mid-October in Mexico.
