Chinese invasion would lead to collapse of world rules-based order: TSMC chair

2022-08-01

On Sunday, U.S. reporter and CNN host Fareed Zakaria had an interview with TSMC chair Mark Liu. The two discussed the impact that a Chinese attack would have on Taiwan’s economy. Let’s hear what they said.

Because the Chinese will never be able to take over the Taiwanese economy. The Taiwanese economy is built on this global collaboration on trust, on openness. They’ll find they’ve taken over nothing if they come in.

Probably the chip is not the most important thing we should worry about, because this invasion, what comes after it, is the destruction of world rules-based order – the geopolitical landscape would completely change. No matter your relationship with China, Taiwan is Taiwan. You have to look at Taiwan by itself, as a vibrant society.

Liu also voiced his hopes for Taiwan’s future, saying that he hoped Taiwan would not be discriminated against due its close ties with China. He added that Taiwan is willing to continue contributing innovations to the world. He also said that there was no need to feel scared about Taiwan’s disputes with its neighbor, China.
