Running protects the knees as it builds up muscle strength: doctor

Running is getting more and more popular in Taiwan. Jogging and power-walking have many fans too. But some folks worry that running will damage their knees. We spoke to a doctor to find out if that’s true. She says that if you run correctly, you will protect your knees, as it helps you build strength. The bigger danger lies in not getting enough exercise.

Road-running events in Taiwan attract thousands of keen runners. More and more people have caught the bug. In the early mornings, sports pitches are full of people either jogging or power-walking.

Many older people still believe that running will hurt their knees. But is that necessarily true?

When the weight of the body presses down on the knee joints, it will cause a certain amount of pressure. But in running, the angle isn’t massive, so it’s not actually such a big stress on the knees. If you use the muscles, they will gradually increase, but if you don’t use the muscles, they will waste away and the loss of muscle strength can be very fast.

Don’t go too fast. Just a leisurely jog is fine. This kind of running track has some give. Plus, it’s important to buy good trainers. They serve to protect the knees.

Your knees can feel sore after a run, and if you don’t run for a while, your stamina will slide. A lack of proper stretching and relaxing the foot muscles can also cause injury. But studies show that a suitable amount of running actually reduces your risk of needing knee surgery. And doctors say you can start with power-walking and practice by running in a swimming pool.

It’s because you’re more buoyant in the water. And just by being in the water and with it swaying you back and forth, the water resistance is helping you to work out, making your muscles work the same way you do when you do strength training.

Doctors say that running is not going to put your knees at risk, even if you’re getting on in years. It’s sitting at a desk for hours every day that is the biggest threat – or letting your muscles and joints waste away. A suitable amount of regular exercise is good for everyone.

跑步傷膝蓋? 醫師:適量跑步有助減緩退化

很多人擔心跑步跑久了,會造成膝蓋負荷,尤其上了年紀,跑起來容易腿痛。不過復健科醫師破除迷思,表示適量跑步反而有助於保養減少膝蓋退化開刀的機率,關鍵在於養成規律的運動習慣,如果平常都不運動的人,一下子跑步,膝蓋容易不舒服,但不代表會傷膝,反而久坐,膝蓋退化風險更高。

台灣路跑活動,上千人在城市跑步畫面超壯觀,近來路跑人口越來越多,早晨的運動場,也能看到不少民眾早起快走或是跑步。

“年紀大了,還是盡量就是用走路的,走路主要是不要傷到這個膝蓋,這樣不好,不要超過自己體力負荷的程度”

很多上了年紀的民眾都有一個迷思,就是怕跑步傷膝蓋,這是真的嗎?

“就是身體重量壓在膝蓋關節,它就會有一定的負荷,那跑步因為它的角度其實不是那麼大,所以對於膝蓋負荷本身其實是還好,肌肉其實的確運用會慢慢越來越進步,但是你不用的時候,它的肌肉流失跟肌肉力量的衰退會很快”

“不要速度太快慢慢跑就好了,而且這種跑道有彈性,那我們球鞋也有買比較好的很重要,對這個膝蓋有保護作用”

跑完膝蓋會痛,通常很久沒跑,肌耐力下滑,或沒做足筋膜放鬆與伸展造成的。研究顯示,適量的慢跑運動反而能減少膝蓋開刀機會。醫師也建議,可以從快走開始、或練習在泳池中走路。

“因為游泳本身有浮力,然後你在活動光前後搖擺的時候,這個水就會有阻力,幫助你做一個很像,我們平常在做重力訓練的肌肉力量的練習”

關鍵就在規律的運動,只要常動,即便上了年紀,也不會增加膝關節退化的機率,反倒像上班族久坐不動,反而增加膝關節壓力,更容易造成膝蓋退化。
