The beloved Taiwan Railways bento boxes have a new recruit! The popular mahi mahi fish now has a spot in the bento line for the first time. But the box is only available at Hualien Station in a limited edition featuring local ingredients. Meanwhile, other new bento boxes are springing up across Taiwan just in time for the fall season. One airline is offering a boxed meal inspired by MasterChef winner Liya Chu.

A fish steak grilled to a golden yellow, with miso sauce and bonito flakes as well as enokitake mushrooms, a specialty of Hualien, and side of asparagus. This is the first mahi mahi bento box produced by TRA. Just 50 limited edition boxes will be made each day until the end of September and sold at Hualien Station.

Mahi mahi has a very firm texture, like I just said. I love that kind of fish, it has a bite to it.

On the first day the mahi mahi was available, customers were keen to try the novelty. One customer bought five at once. Alongside the fish, there’s also tamagoyaki or Japanese omelette, and diced chicken. It’s a highly nutritious lunch allowing visitors to Hualien to support sustainable fishing and sample the local catch.

The ingredients all have a high nutritional value. This is quite distinctive among our different types of bento boxes. If the sales show that this box is appreciated by the public, then we will turn it into a regular specialty lunchbox.

Another seasonal bento sold by TRA is this giant grouper steak box. It’s also proved to be a hit.

But TRA is not the only purveyor of bento boxes to watch out for. Tigerair Taiwan has this U.S. MasterChef Junior bento, featuring the winner of the hit reality show, Taiwanese American teenager Liya Chu. Two of her hit recipes have been reimagined: honey drumsticks with rice-flour noodles, and sweet and sour prawns with walnuts and pineapple. These brand-new options will be available on flights from Oct. 30 onward. As fall approaches, Taiwan’s bento boxes are getting more and more irresistible.


台鐵便當新口味! "鬼頭刀魚"花蓮車站限量開賣

知名的台鐵便當,又推出了新口味!繼6月為了推廣石斑魚,開賣的"龍膽石斑"便當後,台鐵這回開賣"鬼頭刀魚"特色便當,大塊魚排配上花蓮在地的金針菇,今天起至9月底前在花蓮車站限量開賣。另外,台灣虎航則是找來烹飪節目冠軍"台裔女童Liya"合作,推出兩款全新機上餐。

烤到金黃色的魚排,搭配味噌醬汁和柴魚片,還有花蓮盛產的金針菇,及蘆筍作為配菜,台鐵首度推出"鬼頭刀魚"特色便當,到9月底每天限量50份,在花蓮車站開賣。

便當開賣首日,就吸引民眾嘗鮮,還有人一口氣就買了五個,而這回台鐵挑戰用鬼頭刀當主菜,更選用玉子燒、骰子雞等食材,不只讓營養更加分,也讓民眾到花東遊玩時,能品嚐到在地漁產,同時響應永續海鮮的運動。

“這些(食材)都具有相當的營養價值,這個在便當的種類方面是具有相當大的特色,如果便當銷售情況,相當受到民眾歡迎的話,我們會把它轉成常銷型的特色便當”

台鐵季節限定的便當還有這一款,龍膽石斑魚排便當,開賣至今也受到乘客好評。

不讓台鐵專美於前,虎航則找來烹飪節目"小小廚神美國版",第八季的冠軍、台裔女孩Liya,把比賽中的兩道料理改良,推出蜜汁腿排米粉,和甜酸蝦核桃鳳梨炒飯,作為全新機上餐,10/30後出發的航班就會開始提供,從鐵路到航空業都發揮巧思,要在旅程中帶給乘客不同美味。
