Relatives of Lai Ching-te and Hsiao Bi-khim ready for Inauguration Day

With less than a week to go until Inauguration Day, the families of Lai Ching-te and Hsiao Bi-khim are getting ready for the big day. Lai’s wife and two sons will be attending the event, which will likely mark the family’s first public appearance together. On the guest list are also more distant relatives, friends and former classmates. Let’s hear from them.

My grandpa will attend with his sister, Lai’s mother. They’ll go to the event together. They also attended Tsai’s inauguration. But this time will probably be the most excited they have been, and the happiest. They’ll be able to see the ceremony inside the Presidential Office.

I’m going to spend the night of May 19 in Taipei, so I booked a hotel room about half a month before. Her sister and my aunt will be coming back from the U.S. too.

President Tsai attends Cybersec 2024

Cybersecurity has become an increasingly important topic around the world, and the matter has been a key policy for the Tsai administration over the past eight years. On Tuesday, President Tsai Ing-wen headed to Cybersec 2024, where she discussed the government’s goal of boosting the industry’s output to NT$80 billion in 2025. She voiced hope of further cooperation between industry and government to increase Taiwan’s digital resilience.

For the sixth year in a row, President Tsai Ing-wen attended the tech safety event Cybersec, reflecting the government’s commitment to cybersecurity.

Critical infrastructure and prominent companies in both the United States and Taiwan have been and continue to be the targets of cyber hacks.

American Institute in Taiwan Director Sandra Oudkirk called for U.S.-Taiwan cooperation in forming supply chains. Industry representatives thanked the government for the support provided. Besides offering assistance to the six core strategic industries, the National Development Fund has also assisted startups. Over the past decade, the number of participants at Cybersec has increased 20-fold.

Elementary school archery team from Hualien needs help to get to event in Singapore

Over on the east coast there’s an elementary school archery team famous for gold medals and first place finishes. Hualien City’s Zhonghua Elementary School recently earned a spot at an international competition in Singapore but there’s just one problem: the team needs NT$900,000 more in travel expenses if it’s going to make the trip. The team has already fundraised NT$400,000, but before they represent Taiwan on the international stage, they’ll first need the help of some more generous supporters.

Hailing from Hualien, these young archers are refining their skills while listening closely to their coach’s instructions. They’re part of Zhonghua Elementary School’s archery team, which just recently won gold and silver medals in individual events at two national competitions. But that’s not all; the team also earned the right to represent Taiwan at a competition in Singapore this July.

The young athletes are really looking forward to this trip to Singapore, but insufficient travel funds have become a real headache. With 16 members, including coaches and athletes, the team’s expenses for this trip have been estimated at NT$1.4 million. The team has already fundraised NT$500,000, but they’re nervous since they’re still NT$900,000 short of what they need to make the trip become a reality.

The teams need to come up with the budget themselves. Now, many of the students are the children of disadvantaged families, so there’s a lot of difficulty when it comes to getting the funds needed. The parents can help, but they’re truly limited in the amount of resources they can provide.

The registration deadline is in mid-June. If they’re not able to pull together enough money, then they’ll have to forfeit despite earning the right to represent their country. So these young archers are hoping generous benefactors can offer some support in their quest to bring honor to Taiwan through the sport of archery.

Experts from Taiwan and abroad discuss virtual power plants at ITRI symposium

A stable electricity supply is crucial to any country’s economic development and electrical demand only continues to grow amid improvements in technological advancements. Combined with goals to lower carbon emissions, utilizing available resources and developing resilient power grids is key. One of the ways the challenges are being tackled in other countries is by the introduction of virtual power plants, which integrate resources and manage distribution when needed. The Industrial Technology Research Institute held a symposium on the matter with experts, academics and industry heavyweights, who shared their experiences and discussed the merits of the technology.

Over the past few years we’ve garnered technologies in the areas of control systems and forecasting. We think that in the future, Taiwan will face a similar situation to us. We’re very willing to provide our technologies so that we can all stride together toward carbon neutrality.

Virtual power plants integrate different sources such as renewable energy, demand responses and energy storage to form a controllable source of electricity. The plants find the optimal mix and usage to make for an efficient electrical supply system that also improves the resilience of the grid. This technology has been in use for years in Germany and Japan. In Germany, the government has gradually built up a commercial operations model. In Japan, residential energy storage systems have become an important foundation for the development of virtual power plants.

The concept of virtual power plants started forming in Germany more than a decade ago. Then after the Tohoku earthquake of 2011, Japan started promoting the idea proactively. I think Taiwan should learn from all these countries around the world that have been developing virtual power plants over the past 10 years.

ITRI has developed a virtual power plant that aggregates a variety of energy resources. The plant integrates air conditioning at chain stores and school campuses, solar power generators and others into a secondary service market for Taipower. The goal is to make the power grid more stable.

If every household has renewable energy, its management would require a lot of support from virtual power plants and smart grids. It’s only with this kind of help that worries about grid instability can go away.

A stable supply is key for national economic development. After the April 3 earthquake in Hualien, energy storage systems were used to mitigate challenges, demonstrating the resilience of the power grid. Further advancements in virtual power plant technology in the future could lead to higher integration among resources and lower carbon emissions, making the system more environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Over 17,000 medical visits with enterovirus symptoms mark 10-year high

Hospital visits due to enterovirus symptoms hit a 10-year high last week. Over 17,000 people sought treatment, and 256 classes were suspended. The doom and gloom is not expected to last long though, with a children’s medical doctor saying that infection numbers will peak this month or next month, and that infections will start to taper by the summer vacation.

This child already has a fever, and after instructing the little patient to open wide, the doctor sees what’s hiding inside: multiple ulcers. Parents around Taiwan are worried sick as the number of children infected by enteroviruses climbs. Setting a 10-year high for the period, last week’s 17,895 hospital visits were an 8% increase from the previous week.

Last week’s numbers hadn’t accounted for 71 new cases of enterovirus infections. There was probably a bit more than 17,000 visists to NHI-contracted hospitals, which is a 10-year high for this period of the year. The figure also exceeded our epidemic threshold.

A bit of math shows worrying statistics: 256 classes have been suspended, which is 30 more than in the past. Accounting for 117 of those classes was Taipei City. A 1-year-old boy in the north who got infected with COVID is showing enterovirus symptoms and has encephalitis. If the enterovirus diagnosis is confirmed, then he’ll be the first case of a patient to be infected by both viruses.

Enteroviruses don’t have what’s referred to as immunity debt. The virus now is like it was in the past; a wave happens in the early summer, and then once the summer vacation starts in July we’ll start to see the epidemic numbers go down immediately.

Lee Ping-ing said that virus numbers peak between May and June, and the amount of infections slowly starts to decline once the summer break starts. Parents and guardians should seek medical attention immediately if children develop a fever, blisters, or ulcers.

Fine cuisine and sports exchanges boost Taiwan-France ties

Every year, France’s foreign missions hold a gastronomy festival called Good France to celebrate the cuisine and culture of the country. The event is held concurrently in 150 countries across five continents, with different themes year to year. In honor of the Paris Olympics, this year’s edition focuses on sports as well as food. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to French Representative to Taiwan Franck Paris to find out more.

As part of the Good France festival, the French Office in Taipei organized a soccer exchange between Yongchun Senior High School and the Lycee International Francais de Taipei. The first half of the day consisted of soccer training.

In the afternoon, students learned how to cook French dishes. All this was part of the annual Good France gastronomy festival, which this year focused on sports as well as food. French Representative to Taiwan Franck Paris says more exchanges like this will be held throughout the year.

Yes, there will have other experiences because today is a start. We are starting here in Yongchun because we wanted to thank Yongchun Senior High School to host next year the Franco-Taiwanese schools. That is why we also created the possibility of students from Yongchun and students from LIFT to meet today through football game but also through a nice lunch together. We are going to start today here. We are also going hopefully to go to other schools in Taipei and to promote French language and learning French for Taiwanese students.

Paris is getting ready to host the Olympic Games this summer, where athletes from all over the world, including Taiwan will compete for glory. In addition, Taiwan will have a pavilion of its own at the Cultural Olympiad, a companion event to the Games.

We are very proud to hold the Olympics this summer. For a country, it happens once in a century. The last Olympic Games in Paris was in 1924. Just one century before. We are very proud to host Taiwanese sportsmen and sportswomen. We wish them the best of luck. We are also happy that it will also be an opportunity for Taiwan to show its culture to the whole world because there will be a Taiwanese Pavilion in the north of Paris that all people visiting the Olympics will be able to visit.

Paris assumed office in August 2023, after serving as foreign policy adviser to French President Emmanuel Macron. His main goals for his post in Taiwan are to strengthen bilateral ties in the fields of culture and science. He says he hopes to attract more Taiwanese students to study in France.

We want the Taiwanese to put France of the map for scientific cooperation, business, and all human connections, including studying in France which can be a good option for Taiwanese students. We are now looking to catch up with the previous number which was around 3,000 Taiwanese students coming to France. We hope to reach this target in the next month.

The Paris Olympics will take place from July 26 to Aug. 11. Throughout the semester, the French Office in Taipei will hold a variety of Olympic-themed events in Taiwan.
