Families compete in dragon boat race at Taipei Arena

Boat races are an indispensible part of Dragon Boat Festival. To give city kids a chance to participate in the tradition, Taipei Arena for the first time organized a boat race on land. Over 100 people signed up to race boats on foot, filling the arena with laughter as kids too short to reach the ground fell overboard while their competitive parents rushed ahead.

For the first time, Taipei Arena held a dragon boat race on land. Three “boats” set off at the same time, only for one to become immediately stranded.

All moving in unison, the team surges forward full speed ahead.

Another team is held together only by their mom. On this one, they fell overboard. One kid grasps the dragon’s head while sobbing, much to his mom’s amusement.

Kids and adults have to work together. When we go too fast, they can’t get their footing and fall overboard.

To propel the boat forward, participants need to shuffle their legs through five checkpoints. Afterward, they can play games, stand eggs on end, or catch dumplings.

You have to wiggle back and forth to row the boat. It’s so fun. It’s not in the water, it’s on land.

I just raced on the red dragon. I fell over, but was able to get back up by myself.

The event drew 18 teams with over 100 participants. Since it was just for fun, no scores or times were recorded. Many came with the entire family in matching outfits.

This kind of holiday event for families isn’t held very often anymore. Kids are all growing up in the city. I figured since it’s a team event, we should have uniforms to boost our morale.

People think that only concerts are held here at Taipei Arena. We wanted to show people that there are more events they can take part in. So for Dragon Boat Festival, we organized this race to teach kids the origins of the festival.

The event brought festival cheer to the city. It earned high praise from participants, who said they’d like to come back again next year.

小巨蛋首辦陸上龍舟賽! 小孩腳不夠長"翻船" 家長哭笑不得

划龍舟是端午節的重要習俗，但為了讓在市區的親子族群，也能體驗這個傳統活動，小巨蛋首次舉辦陸上龍舟比賽，得靠雙腳，讓船前進，吸引超過百人報名，活動現場笑聲不斷，有家長勝負欲太強，但小朋友腳不夠長，不小心翻船滑倒大哭，讓媽媽是看到哭笑不得。

小巨蛋首次舉辦陸上龍舟賽，三艘龍舟，同時出航，但才剛開始，就有一艘擱淺。

這一隊，動作整齊劃一，全速前進。

另一隊，全靠媽媽出力。還有一隊，小朋友不小心翻船，抱著龍頭大哭，讓媽媽哭笑不得。

“就是要大人小孩一起合作，然後我們可能就太快了，他沒有抓穩，然後就跌倒了，翻船了”

要讓船前進，得靠雙腳驅動，還要過五關，丟沙包、立蛋、接粽子等遊戲。

“我剛剛有玩那個紅色的龍，我有摔倒，可是我又自己爬起來”

活動吸引18組、共計100多名親子朋友參與，不計分、不計時，好玩第一，不少家庭，是穿著親子裝，全家大小報到。

“這種年節的親子活動，其實現在不常見，小朋友都在都市長大，然後覺得既然是團隊活動的話，那我們應該就要有制服，這樣子才一起有(士氣)”

“小巨蛋這邊，其實大家都認為只是辦演場會的地方，那我們為了說，希望可以讓大家參與更多的活動，所以在端午節特地推上，陸上龍舟的這個活動，藉由這些活動，讓小朋友了解端午的由來”

在市區也能應景過節，民眾好評連連，許願下次端午，再來玩。

Road reopened after landslide at Keelung’s Chaojing Park

Traffic has been restored on Provincial Highway No. 2 at Keelung’s Chaojing Park, which was struck by a landslide last Monday. Rubble had fallen over the road, damaging 11 vehicles and blocking traffic in both directions. After a week of repairs, the mountain slope has been stabilized and the debris cleared away. The road was reopened ahead of schedule at 2 p.m. on Monday, just in time for Dragon Boat Festival.

Cars began flooding in as soon as the barriers came down, bringing holidaymakers eager to sightsee on Dragon Boat Festival. Some visitors pulled out their phones to snap a photo of the repaired slope.

Time-lapse photography records the process, showing soil and rocks carpeting the road before they’re gradually lifted away.

We used three layers of concrete blocks as one protection measure. As a second measure, we placed Jersey barriers 3 meters away from the concrete. This way, there’s a buffer zone that allows any small falling rocks to be contained.

A landslide struck Keelung’s Chaojing Park at 2 p.m. last Monday, closing down the Beining Road entrance of Provincial Highway No. 2. The rubble damaged 11 vehicles and sent two people to the hospital. According to the transport ministry, the landslide was due to heavy rain and a recent string of earthquakes. It took one week of repairs to restore traffic.

We are opening the road one day earlier than expected, at 2 p.m. today. The speed limit will be maintained at 25 kilometers an hour. We will also have personnel monitoring the situation and making changes as needed.

The National Museum of Marine Science and Technology has launched discounts to celebrate the reopening. From Tuesday to June 30, tickets will be half-price for all exhibits. The museum will also hold a raffle draw, in hopes of bringing crowds back to the scenic area.

Dresden residents weigh in on TSMC’s European venture

TSMC has been expanding fast to meet global demand. Following ventures in the U.S. and Japan, the company’s board approved a plan to build in Dresden, Germany. Why was this location chosen, and what do the locals think? FTV brings you the latest from Dresden.

From Germany’s capital of Berlin, we took a two-hour drive to Dresden in eastern Germany.

TSMC’s first factory in Europe will be built in Dresden, the capital of Saxony. The fenced-in area you see is roughly 52.7 hectares. It’s right across from a factory of Bosch, an ESMC shareholder.

Last August, TSMC’s board committed NT$123.6 billion to ESMC, the European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which will be supported with an additional NT$174 billion in German subsidies. TSMC will hold a 70% stake, while auto parts supplier Bosch and chip firms Infineon and NXP will each hold 10%.

No, I didn’t know TSMC was going to build a plant here. But I’m happy to hear it. The community will be internationalized.

I had heard about it. This will create great job opportunities, all of which are related to computers, industry and even government administration. This is very important.

Dresden was chosen for several reasons. ESMC, which will focus on auto chips, is just a two-hour drive from Tesla’s factory in Berlin. BMW, Porsche and Volkswagen plants are only an hour away. Just 11 minutes away by car, the old winery town of Weinbohla was once the location of Bosch’s worker dormitories. Rumor has it that TSMC will build a community for its employees there.

Our understanding is that TSMC began recruiting for its German facility about half a year ago. It’s looking for talent including Taiwanese with German work experience. Some restaurant brands already present in TSMC’s Taiwan plants are already planning to come conduct site surveys. Together they will build an unprecedented European auto chip supply chain.

How to find bargains by buying near-expiry products

Inflation has led many of us to feel the pinch in recent months. Buying cut-price goods near their expiry date is one way to snag a bargain. It’s a thriving market that supports several retail chains. But how can you find the best near-expiry products? And if you’re looking to make savings this way, what are the pitfalls to watch out for? We spoke to a number of insiders to find out more about the market for near-expiry goods.

Packets of seasoning and bottled drinks are on sale for just NT$5 each, but they’re expiring within three days. This store opens up big packs and sells their contents in individual units for small change, attracting customers willing to try something new.

I use most things within a week, so I don’t worry about the expiry date.

Customers on a modest income are attracted by these low prices, but to avoid any disputes, these items are marked by a big sign and then pointed out again by the cashier when you pay. If you’re looking for the best bargains, you can join a Line group to get updates on exactly when the store gets a delivery. The bargains are most bountiful the day after a delivery.

You can ask on Line, “What new products have you got?” After the Lunar New Year, inflation was very severe, so sales fell a lot. The suppliers have no choice but to lower prices. So we go and look for the stock and talk to the manufacturers.

But where do all these cheap products come from? This retailer imports large volumes from abroad. It maintains lots of suppliers and therefore has a lot of negotiating power. Other stores that specially sell products near expiry get their stock straight from the manufacturers, and often get the best quality goods. But even if the price is very appealing, you do need to be careful about quality when buying near-expiry goods, or goods returned because of defects.

With products that have been returned from other retailers, you need to check how they were stored by that other retailer. Are they still good? Have they been damaged, have they been exposed to cold temperatures? Or indeed have they been squashed? Once the packaging is damaged, or the bag has burst, it is unsellable. If you see, for example, some chocolate that is deformed, please don’t buy it, and don’t eat it.

This retail system relies on tiny margins for huge volumes of goods, and is a venue for a canny shopper to potentially make huge savings.

Malaysian immigrant builds life as a baker in Kinmen

Growing up in Malaysia, Soh Jia Seng moved to Kinmen in 2014 for university. After graduating, he opened a bakery with his wife, Hung Yu-ting. All their bread is made fresh daily using minimal oil, salt and sugar for a healthier option. With the help of startup resources for young business owners, the small shop quickly gained a reputation and became a famous bakery in Houpu 16 Creative Park.

This is the Houpu 16 Creative Park in Jincheng Township. Here amid traditional Minnan architecture, you’ll find many young entrepreneurs trying to make a start. One among them, Soh Jia Seng is making fresh bread to be sold that day.

Normally we start at 6 a.m., but if there is a special order we will start around 4. One time we made almost 700 salted butter rolls in one day. That was a record.

Soh’s wife Hung Yu-ting is excellent at developing creative ideas and understanding what their customers want. The pair make bread fresh daily, using less oil, salt and sugar and without additives so that their customers can eat baked goods that are both healthy and delicious.

My favorite is our caterpillar cream bread. Other stores’ caterpillar breads always have a lot of glazing on top. My stomach actually can’t handle a lot of bread, but I really like it! My husband makes it without the glaze, and he adjusted the cream filling so that it’s healthier.

Soh began by making cinnamon rolls. His parents-in-law loved them and encouraged him to open a bakery. After three years of hard work, the shop really started to succeed. After more and more customers became regulars, Soh felt a deep sense of accomplishment.

Today he bought a salted butter roll, and I know I will see him tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, and the day after that. That’s what makes me the happiest.

After graduating high school, Soh wanted to study abroad, so he came to Kinmen for university. Ten years later, with a wife and child as a part of his life, Kinmen is like his hometown.

I like the slower pace of life here. Even though I’m really busy, I like this kind of environment. It makes people feel relaxed whenever they have time off.

The storefront of an old building was the start of their bakery, which soon became a place where magic happens. The occasional delivery changes their working style, and when they’re tired, they can visit the beach at any time.

I really want to open a bakery and coffee shop. So, as I gain experience running this first shop, I’m always thinking about opening an even bigger one. I can start with my own breads and sandwiches and then add a drink menu. Customers can enjoy a snack and beverage in the cafe or take it to go.

From Malaysia to Kinmen, Soh is forging his own path in life, constantly moving forward.
