China claims Taiwan has ‘never been a country’

From 6 a.m. on Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday, China sent 27 PLA aircraft and 9 vessels on operations near Taiwan. Fifteen of the aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait. The incursions came ahead of Lai Ching-te’s National Day address, in which he emphasized the sovereignty of the ROC. Let’s hear from China and from an expert.

President Lai is willing to embrace the issue of the ROC from a historical perspective. He’s underscored this approach, even highlighting that the ROC has a history of 113 years. That’s different from the rhetoric previously espoused by the Taiwan independence supporters. It’s more of an ROC independence approach.
A political science professor from National Taiwan University says Lai may have chosen to speak about the ROC to unite different camps within Taiwan. In his words to China, the president maintained the usual stance, urging Beijing to cooperate on peace and stability and drawing international attention to Taiwan’s complicated situation.
