ROC aesthetics and history debate heats up for National Day

Every year, the ROC National Day in Taiwan divides opinion, due to the nation’s complicated history and current status. And this year is no different. The topics under discussion include a recent comment from the President Lai Ching-te, who said that it was impossible for the PRC to be the motherland of the ROC. Another issue is the return of nationalistic ROC aesthetics in this year’s visuals, which mark a clear departure from the past eight years and were approved by the KMT-controlled legislature.
It’s National Day! Attendees of the celebration at the Presidential Office go through security check. The security personnel have been on duty since the early hours, to ensure safety for the big day.
At the event venue, a police officer sets off a radio jammer to keep drones out. Near the stage the seats are being repeatedly checked. It’s all set! Let’s see who’s joining.

The crowd is even bigger this year. The national flag top is NT$500 and the afro wig is NT$150. We’ve prepared 500 sets today to give out to guests for free.
Of course, it’s not every day that tourists get to experience National Day. Here’s a family of four that was gifted with the National Flag Auntie’s memorabilia.

Also joining in the jubilation are overseas nationals. How do they feel about the president’s comment that the PRC cannot possibly be the motherland of the ROC?

That’s just the way it is. The ROC has been around for more than 100 years, they only have 70-ish years, am I right? What “motherland?” We have different mothers. Can the older one call the younger one the motherland? Impossible.

Commenting on the motherland issue in such a context seems a bit abrupt to me. How I feel is I’d rather he say it at another occasion.
Another divisive issue this year was the visuals, clearly leaning more towards traditional ROC aesthetics. What do they have to say on this?

Personally I prefer last year’s, because last year’s visuals had more Indigenous and local Taiwan elements, while this year’s has more of an ROC flavor. I prefer last year’s.

Truly, I think that as long as we’re seeing so many flags in the air and all of us united under this banner, then we’re all very, very happy.

雙十國慶大典 "祖國論"、"華國美學"成討論話題

國慶大典，不少僑胞回國共襄盛舉，而針對總統賴清德，日前在國慶晚會上，拋出的"祖國論"，多數僑胞認同這樣的說法，但也有人認為，或許不用"特別公開講"，而對於今年的國慶主視覺，就有僑胞不諱言，是典型的"華國美學"，反倒認為去年"台灣美學"比較好看。
歡度國慶，準備參加典禮的民眾，依序通過安檢門排隊進場，一早國安人員，就在管制區，加強檢測，維安工作滴水不露。
就怕無人機闖入會場，刑警出動干擾器，就連國慶舞台區，座椅裡裡外外，全都再次檢查，確保典禮能夠順利進行。去年缺席的國旗阿姨，今年再度現身。

“今年的人潮更多，國旗衣服一件就五百元了，那國旗帽一頂就要一百五了，我們今天準備了五百套，都免費送給來賓”
就有外國觀光客來台，順道參觀國慶典禮，穿上國旗衣和戴上國旗帽，感受台灣國慶氛圍。

“很好，真的很好，每個人都很友善、精神抖擻，孩子們玩得很開心，這是我打扮得漂漂亮亮的小孩子，很有趣的一個早晨”
日前總統賴清德，在國慶晚會上，拋出"祖國論"，多數僑胞都認同。

“本來就是這樣子啊，中華民國一百多年，他們才七十幾年，對不對，什麼祖國，祖國不一樣嘛。大的去說比較小的是祖國，不可能的啦”

“好像這個場合，好像講這個祖國論，我是覺得有點點突兀，我的感覺，我是希望他在別的時候講沒關係”
至於今年的國慶主視覺回歸藍營的華國美學風格，連兩年參加國慶典禮的僑胞，格外有感。

“個人來說我比較喜歡去年，因為去年原住民的一些台灣元素比較多，今年為中華民國的元素比較多，我比較喜歡去年”

“我覺得真的是只要看到，這麼多的國旗飄揚，然後大家同心一致，我們就非常非常地高興”
