Marching bands, a capella songs thrill National Day spectators

This year’s National Day celebration was an ambitious showcase of all things that make Taiwan stand out. Besides the usual marching band performances and military parades and flypasts, there were also cheerleaders, blind acapella singers and dragon dancers. Another highlight of the show was a parade by the athletes that represented Taiwan at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics. Let’s have a look.

Then the marching band from Taipei First Girls’ High School takes over. With perfectly executed rifle tricks, elegant flag dances and immaculate formation changes, it was a show of mutual understanding.

Then the Honor Guard presented performance of the highest caliber, with clean and precise moves, ending with a Double Ten formation.

A thundering of drums and a flurry of flags. The Army’s drummers stunned the audience with a majestic performance. And for the first time in 10 years, the Army’s 333rd Mechanized Infantry Brigade and its dragon dance troupe had a moment in the spotlight at the ceremony.

Cheerleaders infected the audience with their enthusiasm, pulling off one energy-filled chant after another. The parade wasn’t just a feast for the eyes, but also for the ears.

A group of blind singers from the group The Bleinders performed a medley of Taiwanese classics a cappella, bringing to the fore the diversity of Taiwan.

The second half of the show featured a parade to celebrate the athletes that represented Taiwan at the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, as well as the baseball team from Taoyuan’s Guishan Elementary School and Taiwan’s U-17 volleyball team. All in all it was a festival like no other to wish the nation a happy birthday.

國慶大典雙十登場，暖場演出，由北一女中樂儀旗隊打頭陣，緊接著三軍儀隊操演花式操槍，還有視障人聲樂團，唱出優美歌聲，展現台灣的多元與溫暖，獲得現場如雷掌聲，最後還有巴黎奧運及帕運的選手車隊，也是活動的一大亮點，讓民眾能一睹英雄風采。

五架勇鷹機隊，呈大雁隊形，從總統府飛越會場上空，為國慶典禮揭開序幕。

接著由北一女中樂儀旗隊打頭陣，高難度的拋槍、轉槍，再搭配旗隊優雅舞姿，活潑多變的隊形，展現絕佳默契。

三軍儀隊步伐整齊劃一，展現高水準演出，操演的尾聲，排列成雙十隊形。

大力擊鼓、出動戰旗，陸專戰鼓隊磅礡氣勢，震撼全場，還有睽違十年未見的機步333旅，埔光龍隊，今年首次在國慶舞台上亮相。

還有啦啦隊女孩，一字排開，活力熱舞，炒熱現場氣氛。但除了滿足視覺享受，聽覺饗宴，當然也不能漏掉。

蝦米視障人聲樂團，用阿卡貝拉的形式，唱出一首首經典歌曲，美聲繚繞府前，展現台灣多元與包容。

最後活動下半場，還有巴黎奧運、帕運的選手都來到現場，以及優秀的龜山國小少棒隊、U17排球隊，全都站在車隊上，讓民眾能一睹英雄風采，在雙十國慶當天，一同慶祝台灣，生日快樂。

ROC aesthetics and history debate heats up for National Day

Every year, the ROC National Day in Taiwan divides opinion, due to the nation’s complicated history and current status. And this year is no different. The topics under discussion include a recent comment from the President Lai Ching-te, who said that it was impossible for the PRC to be the motherland of the ROC. Another issue is the return of nationalistic ROC aesthetics in this year’s visuals, which mark a clear departure from the past eight years and were approved by the KMT-controlled legislature.

It’s National Day! Attendees of the celebration at the Presidential Office go through security check. The security personnel have been on duty since the early hours, to ensure safety for the big day.

At the event venue, a police officer sets off a radio jammer to keep drones out. Near the stage the seats are being repeatedly checked. It’s all set! Let’s see who’s joining.

The crowd is even bigger this year. The national flag top is NT$500 and the afro wig is NT$150. We’ve prepared 500 sets today to give out to guests for free.

Of course, it’s not every day that tourists get to experience National Day. Here’s a family of four that was gifted with the National Flag Auntie’s memorabilia.

Also joining in the jubilation are overseas nationals. How do they feel about the president’s comment that the PRC cannot possibly be the motherland of the ROC?

That’s just the way it is. The ROC has been around for more than 100 years, they only have 70-ish years, am I right? What “motherland?” We have different mothers. Can the older one call the younger one the motherland? Impossible.

Commenting on the motherland issue in such a context seems a bit abrupt to me. How I feel is I’d rather he say it at another occasion.

Another divisive issue this year was the visuals, clearly leaning more towards traditional ROC aesthetics. What do they have to say on this?

Personally I prefer last year’s, because last year’s visuals had more Indigenous and local Taiwan elements, while this year’s has more of an ROC flavor. I prefer last year’s.

Truly, I think that as long as we’re seeing so many flags in the air and all of us united under this banner, then we’re all very, very happy.

Driftwood from typhoon brings a fresh touch to Taipei Zoo

A shipment of new furniture has arrived at Taipei Zoo. And it’s thanks to an unlikely benefactor: Typhoon Gaemi! Following the recent typhoon, the zoo got in touch with Yilan County, and asked if it could receive some logs thrown up by the storm. Yilan Forestry officials sprang into action, to collect flotsam and jetsam from the county’s beaches and riverbanks. Now the driftwood they collected can be seen at Taipei Zoo, bringing a fresh atmosphere to the enclosures of many different animals.

An otter wriggles around on a log, in constant motion. Others use a log as a bed: and they don’t feel like getting up in the morning. These logs are all driftwood, blown up onto the banks of rivers by the recent typhoon.

The driftwood is a great upgrade to the furniture of these animals at Taipei Zoo in Muzha. The white rhinos are using it to scratch and sharpen their horns. The panda here turns it into a climbing frame. Who knew a log had so many uses?

Taipei Zoo reached out to get in touch with us. They wanted to use some natural materials, in their artificial environments. These logs are very good for the animals to interact with; they’re a natural resource.

The riverbanks and beaches of Yilan were covered with flotsam and jetsam after Typhoon Gaemi passed by. Taipei Zoo got in touch with the Yilan branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency as well as the county government. The three agencies worked together to get these logs into the zoo and make the animals’ living spaces a little bit natural.

For this project, we worked with Yilan County government, and got driftwood from Keng-fang Fishing Harbor, as well as Ta-hsi Fishing Harbor and all the way from Donggang. So far, for this first round of the project we have transported about 50 logs to the zoo.

The logs can be seen at the zoo in many different enclosures across five zones of the zoo, including the Africa Zone, the Rainforest Zone, and the Panda Pavilion.
