Hakka exhibition explores language, culture and power

2025-01-10

Today we take you to an exhibition that explores Hakka vocabulary and culture. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to one of the participating artist groups to find out more about their works and how they’re advocating for the Hakka language.

Jimmy Chien and Hong Yinull created a world in which the Hakka language is the dominant language. They built a convenience store and rebranded well-known products into Hakka versions.

After scanning the products at the checkout, it will read out product names and prices in Hakka. The duo spent six months on product design and worked with a Hakka teacher to redesign the products.

I had the opportunity to take a Hakka language course which led to the realization that despite hearing Hakka on public transportation announcements, I have never spoke the language in public spaces. The feeling of disconnection drove the idea of imagining a world where Hakka is the main language.

We presented two familiar settings: an office and a convenience store. These everyday environments are completely transformed by the Hakka language. Every sign, every label and even the interactive elements are designed to immerse the viewers where Hakka takes center stage.

The exhibition is called "Realm of Words," which explores Hakka vocabulary, cuisine, gender awareness, religious beliefs, cultural identity and social reflection through various types of art forms.

By reversing the roles of dominant and minority languages, we hope to provoke questions about the significance of language preservation and the challenges faced by minority languages like Hakka in a fast-paced urbanized society.

Through this artwork, we invite visitors to reflect on how language shapes identity and cultural power. Languages are more than just tools for communication. We hope that through the immersive experience, visitors will gain a deeper appreciation for the Hakka languages.

To experience the work for yourself, head to the Taipei City Hakka Cultural Park, where the exhibition will be held till March 31, 2025.
