Energy efficiency forum highlights dozens of green technologies

It’s a key moment for industries worldwide to transition to sustainable energy. The Industrial Technology Research Institute recently hosted the fourth annual ITRI Net Zero Day, where companies from around Taiwan shared their experience of the energy transition. ITRI president Edwin Liu said that Taiwanese manufacturers have excellent technologies. This year’s focus is on improving energy efficiency, bringing Taiwan closer to its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Pushing for energy sustainability, ITRI’s fourth annual forum this year was organized around the theme of energy efficiency.

ITRI is providing these technologies in the hopes that, amid the challenge of achieving net zero, all industries can have new business opportunities.

Apart from the forum, ITRI also exhibited many innovative technologies and services. These include the world’s first H-beam steel welding technology that shortens lead times from 20 to three days, achieving 80% energy savings and emissions reduction.

Taiwan produces 5 million tons of asphalt shavings every year. Through a separation system, this reclaimed asphalt pavement can be transformed into 3.5 million tons of recycled gravel and asphalt, cutting carbon emissions by 270,000 tons.

Fresh Kaohsiung plums available in stores throughout Taiwan

It’s plum season in Taiwan, and Kaohsiung, the nation’s biggest plum producer, is making it easier than ever to enjoy fresh, local fruit. Kaohsiung’s Agriculture Bureau and Council of Indigenous Peoples have teamed up with major supermarket chains so people don’t need to travel to buy them. Instead, fresh organic plums from Kaohsiung are now available at 65 major supermarkets across Taiwan. Each package comes with simple instructions to make homemade plum drinks or preserves, bringing a taste of spring to people’s homes.

Kaohsiung’s organic plums can now be bought all over Taiwan, with a recent campaign by the Kaohsiung City Government with major retail stores. Now, people can now purchase fresh plums from local retailers, rather than having to travel to orchards in Kaohsiung’s mountainous regions.

The quality of these plums is comparatively better because there was enough rain this year. We cooperated with 65 retailers across Taiwan to sell these organic plums.

Look, they are beautiful, green, and large, each one bigger than a NT$50 coin. Most importantly, our people raise these plums with care. We harvest and pick them ourselves, carefully selecting them through a sorting process.

These green plums are big and juicy, and can easily be turned into sweet and tangy preserves. Guests at the press conference tasted them on the spot and started singing their praises.

This sweet and sour flavor tastes like falling in love. Those who haven’t fallen in love yet will want to.

Kaohsiung has 1,395 hectares of land dedicated to cultivating plums, mainly in the mountainous districts of Jiaxian, Taoyuan, Namaxia, and Liugui. Growing around 10,000 metric tonnes of plums annually, it is the largest plum-producing region in Taiwan. As this is the first time they’re available in large supermarkets, instructions on how best to use them have been included. Guests also demonstrated how to make plum vinegar on the spot in three simple steps.

Two Tainan restaurants make April Michelin Guide

Tainan, a city known for its food, welcomed two small, local restaurants to the April edition of the Michelin Guide. One shop sells milkfish balls, while the other specializes in mutton soup. Both restaurants were surprised to be recommended by Michelin, but the owners worry that the newfound fame will attract more customers than they can handle.

The mutton at this restaurant is delivered fresh daily, then stewed for at least four hours in Chinese herbs. This flavorful mutton soup is famous in Tainan’s Xinhua District.

It’s delicious. Everything is delicious. I’ve eaten their mutton under the wax apple tree out back since I was young. I moved to Tainan’s East District after marrying, but I have it whenever I come back here.

This long roll of sheepskin wrapped around mutton is a special dish only available on weekends. They began as a small stand under a wax apple tree in a local market 70 years ago, growing to open their own storefront. Although it’s famous among locals, the owners were surprised when their restaurant was recommended by the Michelin Guide.

Actually, I was kind of surprised. And I’m actually still a little nervous. They had the sheepskin roll, which means they definitely came on the weekend.

The Michelin Guide recommended new restaurants in April, including two restaurants in Tainan. The other one is in the West Central District and specializes in fish balls. Its signature crispy fish balls are made from milkfish, which is pounded repeatedly to give it a springy texture. Customers here often pair the signature fish ball soup with a bowl of braised pork over rice.

Of course it’s delicious, otherwise I wouldn’t eat here all the time. You should come earlier, not at mealtimes, otherwise it’s too busy.

Although it was recognized by Michelin, the owners are more concerned than happy.

Those of us from Tainan are even more nervous now. If kids moved away, they shouldn’t bother coming back on weekends.

Both shops are nervous that a new influx of customers will impact their service. They may soon be overwhelmed with tourists, leaving locals to compete with crowds to enjoy their long-time favorites.

Tainan facility teaches children traffic safety through games

Most schools teach road safety to children starting when they’re little, but many don’t have a place to put these concepts into practice. To solve the issue, the Tainan City Government created the Tainan Traffic Park. Outfitted with road lanes, traffic circles, intersections, and level crossings, children can practice proper traffic safety through games to improve their ability to look out for themselves on the road.

To give children a safe place to learn concepts of road safety, the city government made this park especially equipped with miniaturized traffic education facilities.

It emulates actual road conditions. Apart from children and parents coming here to play on their own, more importantly, it incorporates our traffic safety guidance with lessons taught by schools. We encourage schools to organize field trips here to put their teachings into practice.

The park has road lanes, traffic circles, intersections, one-way streets, and winding roads, even a railroad crossing. Here, kids can experience everything they may encounter out in the world. Through playing games, they can learn correct traffic safety knowledge and how to protect themselves.

Unlike other places, this is more like a recreational or leisure park. Our traffic park here is committed to making learning fun. So a lot of the facilities are the same as ones you’d find out on the street, just miniaturized. I hope we can teach kids how to be safe on the roads starting from a young age, and to impart proper ideas of how to respect traffic rules.

The city government hopes that with this special park, apart from instilling traffic safety concepts, it can also teach a pedestrian-first mentality to deeply embed these ideas in children from an early age.

Orphaned child’s artwork sells for NT$300,000 to support shelter

Anren Home in Liujiao Township is Chiayi County’s first halfway home for children and adolescents. For 15 years, the facility has helped nearly 40 children who have been displaced by turmoil at home. Six years ago, they started a pottery class to help introduce the children to art and give them confidence. Their artwork is being exhibited at a major hotel this year and was auctioned off to raise funds. Local donors gave generously, spending a total of NT$1.22 million on the artwork. One even sold for NT$300,000.

Here at this ceramics auction, one piece sold for as high as NT$300,000. But the artist isn’t some famous name. They’re an orphaned child living at a local home.

If in 60 children there are five to seven who give back to their community, then it’s all worth it.

All kinds of ceramic artwork created by children are being exhibited and auctioned off at this hotel. They’ve raised NT$1.22 million in total—not an insignificant contribution for Anren Home. Founded 15 years ago, the home is Chiayi County’s first facility for children and youth who have been displaced by a turbulent home life.

We take in children from birth to 18 years old. Right now, we have 37 kids. The youngest is nine months old. For about two-fifths of our funding, we rely on donations from the public.

Six years ago, Anren Home started a ceramics class for the children to have an artistic outlet and build confidence. They were invited to exhibit and hold an auction this year at a large hotel, attracting many generous donors.

Every piece is signed on the bottom by the children. I think, if a child knows their artwork was purchased, it would give them a lot of confidence and make them thrilled.

Education Ministry working on materials for national identity

The Ministry of Education is drafting up a set of supplementary materials regarding national identity in Taiwan. The move comes amid a string of reports in which teachers promoted a Chinese identity at school. A parent’s association says, that although having an awareness of national security issues is important, there should be room for independent thinking as well.

Amid reports of educators trying to promote a Chinese identity at schools, the Ministry of Education is creating new teaching materials on identifying the Chinese threat and other international trends. The materials, which will be finalized before the summer break, aim to strengthen the national identity of students at elementary and junior high schools.

Earlier, she had posted a picture with TSMC CEO C.C. Wei announcing AMD’s first processor using TSMC’s 2nm technology. She is confident that AMD will be able to manage supply chain issues with Taiwan partners amid a number of uncertainties regarding US tariffs.
