Kaohsiung celebrates French culture with markets, concerts and more!

And for fans of all things France, Kaohsiung could just be the place to go. The southern port city is holding a vibrant festival celebrating French culture, from May 23 until May 25. There’s going to be open-air markets, live concerts, demonstrations of French cuisine and even virtual reality experiences. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us for a closer look.

Last year’s Kaoshiung French Festival attracted 110,000 participants over three days—it was highly successful. This year, we’re adding marine technology elements to make it even more interesting and fun.

And there’s also delicious cuisine—this year it’s even more spectacular than last year. Everyone, come and experience authentic French life together.

The event returns with highlights such as outdoor concerts, French cooking shows, and a market selling French delicacies, beverages, and crafts. You can also enjoy a marine-themed VR film and interact with French influencers.

I am the lead visual designer for the French Kaohsiung Festival. I wanted to combine modern and traditional elements. So I first drew sketches with a pencil and inked them with markers. Then I scanned the drawings and colored them in on my iPad. The topics I cover in my drawings are usually my own stories or those of others. I find Taiwan very interesting. Whenever I go for a walk, I encounter many intriguing things, whether it’s people, objects, or the scenery. Kaohsiung is like a microcosm of Taiwan, with diverse districts, including the ocean and an enormous harbor.

The Kaohsiung French Festival will be held at Kaohsiung’s Pier 2 from May 23 until May 25.

高雄市政府於5月23日至5月25日舉辦「2025法國生活節」。法國生活節規劃了市集、音樂會、法國美食展示，甚至還有虛擬實境體驗、等活動。一起來看看。

New Taipei City takes emergency measures following fatal car crash

Three people were killed when a car rammed into a crowd of people in Sanxia Monday afternoon. They were two teens attending Sanxia Junior High School, and a 40-year-old woman on her way to pick up her daughter from Beida Elementary School. On Tuesday, mourners created a memorial at the site. Meanwhile, the New Taipei City government has taken emergency measures, such as offering counseling service in the affected schools and sending police officers to stand guard as new policies to better enforce road safety are being considered.

I never imagined that something so terrible would happen right around me. We didn’t do anything wrong, but it still happened all of a sudden anyway.

Starting yesterday, the city government has launched a one-on-one counseling program. Starting this morning, we also dispatched all psychologists and social workers registered in the city to stand on duty in the two affected schools.

A 40-year old woman was also killed by the crash. She was driving a scooter to Beida Elementary School to pick up her daughter, but didn’t survive the crash that happened while waiting a red light.

We weren’t sure if her mother had been affected, but we couldn’t reach her. So we decided to take the kid home. She said her mother is usually on time to pick her up.

The kid had waited at the gate for more than ten minutes, unusual given her mother is usually on time. A teacher knew something was wrong, so the child was sent home. No one knew that her mother had been struck by the car.

The student kept waiting next to the guardhouse to be picked up, so she wouldn’t have known that her mother was implicated in the car crash, and so she didn’t show any signs of emotional distress. Only when it was past 9 p.m. did her father reach out to us.

Meanwhile, the New Taipei City Police Department sent ten officers to stand guard around campus to enforce traffic safety.

Although we noted that all the relevant road signs and markings were present and functioning in our initial assessment, the question of whether to introduce a pedestrian priority zone remains imperative.

In the meantime, the key still lies in drivers’ awareness of road safety so that nothing of the sort should happen ever again.

Li Chi-mao’s centennial exhibition at the National Museum of History

Li Chi-Mao was a renowned Taiwanese ink painter, known for blending traditional ink techniques with Western sketching styles, often inspired by animals, Taiwanese folk customs, street scenes, and rural life. To pay tribute to the late artist, the National Museum of History is holding an exhibition showcasing his masterpieces. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to Li’s daughter to find out more about his works and the legacy her father hoped to leave.

This is Li Chi-Mao’s final masterpiece, "Heavenly Steed." The painting symbolizes freedom and vitality.

He grew up in a family with horses, so he had a special affection for them. After a lifetime of painting horses, he finally created this one less than a year before his death. This is a group of horses racing. The ink and color work together well, it feels as if the ink hadn’t dried yet. It shows a change in rhythm.

Li’s works were greatly inspired by his travels internationally and in Taiwan. These works were inspired by the eagles he saw in the Middle East.

There are several works on display, including three featuring eagles. Over the past decade, he had been documenting the ecology of eagles in the Middle East and the Northwest, creating pieces that reflect different periods of his artistic journey. He didn’t create drafts, as his exceptional memory allowed him to envision compositions in detail. When he painted, he had to physically connect with the paper, understanding its layout and spatial balance. As soon as he put pen to paper, the entire composition would come to life. For instance, his eagle paintings are executed in a freehand brush work style.

This ink painting illustrates Taipei’s metro system, showcasing the combination of busyness and the beautiful stillness and scenery of Taiwan.

The black area at the top is used to emphasize visual contrast. Amid the movement and murmuring of people in the crowded train car, one can quietly gaze into the distance at Guanyin Mountain. The composition combines dynamic and still elements, creating a contrast between motion and stillness. The low vantage point of the work encourages the viewer to look upward and into the distance.

Throughout his career, he exhibited his works internationally, promoting art and culture, and taught at various universities. His contributions earned him numerous awards. Li’s daughter says her father’s perseverance and dedication for his craft greatly inspired her. Despite being in a wheelchair during the latter years of his life, he never stopped creating and traveling.

When he created this artwork, he was nearly 90 years old and had to use a wheelchair. He had to overcome numerous physical and mental challenges during the creative process. We are deeply grateful for the experiences and insights he shared with us, allowing us to witness his transformations throughout different periods of his life. Whether young and full of energy or old age, he never ceased to evolve and reinvent himself. I believe this mindset is something we can all learn from. It has been a great source of inspiration for me.

Li Chi-Mao’s exhibit will be on display at the National Museum of History in Taipei until June 8. It celebrates the 100th anniversary of Li Chi-Mao’s birth, showcasing 69 works from 25 different institutions. Some of the works are on display for the first time, to pay tribute to the renowned artist and keep his legacy alive.

President Lai Ching-te marks first anniversary in office

It’s May 20, meaning President Lai Ching-te has been in office for a full year. In the morning, he delivered remarks to mark the milestones of his first year as president and touched upon some of the challenges and next steps for his administration. Lai also announced that he has instructed the national security team to prepare for a briefing with leaders of opposition parties, as an attempt to resolve Taiwan’s current political gridlock.

For many years now, Taiwan, the US, and our democratic partners have actively engaged in exchange and cooperation, spurring mutual growth. Among friends, there is always some friction; but that friction is always resolvable. Through mutual exchange, friends can smooth out their shortcomings and further hone their strengths. Even when differences arise, so long as there is a foundation built on trust and honest dialogue, friends can better understand one another and further deepen their bonds.

Electricity supply remains a hot topic, especially so now that all nuclear power plants in the country are shut down. Although opposition parties seek to reinstate nuclear reactors, Lai said it can only be so once safety assessments are thoroughly made.

On the condition that nuclear power plant safety can be ensured, nuclear waste has a solution and the broader society reaches a consensus, the government will then consider the matter prudently and responsibly.

During remarks, Lai also said amid domestic and international challenges, the ruling and opposition parties must be united. He also stated his intention to make a national security briefing with leaders of opposition parties.

I have always been willing, with open arms, to work hard for cross-party dialogue and strengthened cooperation among our political parties. That is why I will be instructing our national security team to initiate a major national security briefing for the chairs of opposition parties. It is hoped that leaders of all parties, regardless of political stance, can prioritize our nation’s interests and uphold our nation’s security; and grounded in shared facts, we can openly and honestly exchange views and discuss matters of national importance. Success is 30 percent destiny and 70 percent hard work. We will maintain solidarity.

The day before, the president had sat his first interview with a foreign broadcaster. The reporter was none other than Sho Sakurai, who started out as a member of Arashi, a popular boy band. Sakurai is now presenting Nippon TV’s ongoing special program commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII. The interview touched upon cross-strait issues and Taiwan’s role in regional security.

COMPUTEX Kicks off with exhibitors from 30+ countries

The highly anticipated COMPUTEX Taipei 2025 kicked off on Tuesday morning at Nangang Exhibition Center. This year, the event has exhibitors from more than 30 countries, totaling 1,400 companies across almost 5,000 booths. Almost 50,000 international buyers have preregistered for the event, marking a new high for the exhibition. Among the people speaking at the opening ceremony on Tuesday was President Lai Ching-te.

The show opens with an AI number that turned TAITRA Chair James Huang into a humanoid robot. The exciting show has kicked off the COMPUTEX Taipei 2025, under the banner “AI Next.” With exhibitors from more than 30 countries and more than 4,800 booths across two exhibition halls, it is the largest edition of the expo yet.

Taiwan will actively work with allied nations to sign investment protection agreements and double taxation avoidance agreements, and to promote global cooperation through an initiative to create a partnership of democratic semiconductor supply chains.

Lai toured the exhibition space, and visited several booths showcasing the latest technologies. The 4-day show is not just about showing off cutting-edge tech, it’s also an economic booster shot.

There are 50,000 international buyers from 129 countries pre-registered for the event. That’s the largest international buyer turnout out of the nearly 30 international exhibitions that TAITRA hosts every year. Amid ever-growing business opportunities, it’s hard to put a concrete number on the amount of potential deals.

Computex will also host keynote sessions with CEOs from several tech companies, as Taiwan spearheads a new wave of AI innovation.
