Broken pipe at Taichung power plant leads to a drop in power output amid soaring temperatures

2022-07-24

Sunday’’s weather was still extremely hot. Fuli Township in Hualien recorded the highest temperature on the island at 40.4 degrees, tying the existing record. Meanwhile in Banqiao, New Taipei, the mercury reached 39.4 degrees, marking the highest temperature in 20 years as recorded by the local weather station.

High temperatures mean high power consumption, and a pipe burst in the no. 2 unit at Taichung Power Plant Sunday, sharply reducing power supply down to just 37 gigawatts. Operating reserve was down to 7.14%, reaching an amber alert status, a rarely seen warning indicating that the power supply is stretched. Taipower says there’’s a good chance that power supply will be back to normal at midnight tonight.
