CECC reports 22,983 local COVID cases, confirms MIS-C in eight children

The CECC reported 22,983 local COVID cases on Friday, as well as 79 more patients with moderate symptoms and 61 with severe symptoms. Health officials also confirmed multisystem inflammatory syndrome in eight infected children, some of whom have already recovered. Two of the children with MIS-C were also infected with rotavirus and mycoplasma pneumoniae, making them the first two cases of concurrent infection in Taiwan. Let’s hear from the CECC.

Six of them are 5 years old or younger. Then there is an 8-year-old and an 11-year-old. Many of them were diagnosed with COVID in May and June and developed MIS-C in June and July. The longest interval was a patient who was confirmed with COVID on May 27, and developed symptoms on July 17. Five of the children have already recovered and have been discharged from the hospital. Three of them are still hospitalized. Of the three still in the hospital two of them are the first in Taiwan to have a concurrent infection together with MIS-C. One of them has a rotavirus infection and the other, mycoplasma pneumoniae.
According to the CECC, 136 children aged 12 and below have experienced severe COVID symptoms so far. Two-thirds of them were aged 5 and below. Originally, numbers of children with severe symptoms were evenly split between children aged 0 to 5 and 6 to 12. But the proportion of younger children with severe infections has recently started increasing, because, according to the CECC, vaccines offering protection from severe symptoms became available for older children.

COVID疫情週五單日新增本土22983例、中症患者新增79例，重症患者新增61例。指揮中心特別指出，新增8名兒童MIS-C重症，其中2例合併輪狀病毒，以及肺炎黴漿菌等共同感染疾病，更是國內首見。

“5歲以下的有6位，另外有2位是8歲跟11歲。很多是在5月到6月的時候確診新冠，在6月到7月這段時間出現MIS-C相關症狀。時間最長的是5/27確診，到7/17發病。當中有5位小朋友都已經康復出院，還有3位仍然在住院當中。我們今天有3位還在住院的小朋友，其中有2位算首見的，MIS-C之外，有合併其他病毒或細菌感染，1位是輪狀病毒，1位是黴漿菌。”
指揮中心統計，目前國內12歲以下的兒童重症，累計136例，其中有三分之二是6歲以下，6到12歲佔三分之一。原先兒童重症6歲以上和以下各約佔一半，近來幼童佔比增加，主要是這個年齡層比較沒有打疫苗的緣故。
