It’s nearly rice harvest season, and farmers are hard at work preparing the fields – and protecting them from birds. One farmer in Chiayi has become famous locally for a very unusual scarecrow. The field in Xingang Township is covered in hundreds of pink and white plastic bags, which rustle in the wind. They scare away would-be scavengers, at the same time as attracting tourists, who enjoy the unusual sight.
A sea of what looks like pink balloons flutters in the wind. It’s a beautiful spot for a selfie in the gentle southern sunlight.
Originally put up to scare birds away, these plastic bags make a gentle rustle in the breeze that prevents the birds from coming to steal rice.

It’s about knowing the technique. You tie the bottom of the bag and that makes the noise louder and then it works. I thought of it myself; nobody taught me.
The farmer once used a whistle to scare birds away, but eventually it stopped bothering them.

They don’t fear it. They’re only scared by people shouting.
Some people use firecrackers to scare birds, but they’re hard to light when it’s windy or drizzling, so farmers invented this wind-breaking firecracker tunnel.

Light the incense and put it in the tunnel. It has another function, which is that the vibrations of the sound create a massive noise.
As the rice ripens, farmers are frequently sparring with little birds, using every tool at their disposal. Now even pink plastic bags have found a use, and produced a festive destination for locals.

數大就是美，吹氣膨脹的大型紅色塑膠袋，集合了上千支，插在碧綠的稻田，也能成為打卡景點。這些紅色塑膠袋，原來是嘉義縣新港鄉稻農自製的驅鳥神器，遠遠看過去像是小氣球，又像是輕飄飄的小天燈，沒想到，農民用來對付小鳥的工具，意外成了打卡美景。
就像迎風搖曳的小紅球，散佈在綠色農田，配合南台灣暖陽晴空，這幅美景成為打卡景點。
原本是農民的驅鳥神器，利用風吹塑膠袋，發出的隨風聲響來趕鳥，防止鳥類搶食稻米。

以前也曾經用吹哨子來趕鳥，但是久了也沒效果。

放鞭炮嚇鳥也是一種方法，不過，風太大或下毛毛雨，鞭炮不好點著，農民還設計防風的炮桶。

稻子成熟季節，農民經常要和小鳥鬥智。沒想到這回紅色塑膠袋，引起民眾好奇，成了另類的打卡景點。
