CDC reports four seasonal flu deaths, urges high-risk groups to get vaccinated

Though COVID is winding down in Taiwan, the seasonal flu is staging a comeback. According to the CDC, last week, Taiwan reported eight flu patients with severe symptoms, four of whom died with the disease. Let’s hear from the CDC.

Today we’re reporting on four deaths of patients with severe symptoms of the seasonal flu. Their ages ranged from the 30s to the 80s. The youngest case was a man in his 30s residing in Northern Taiwan. He had a history of chronic diabetes. He was infected in late January. At the beginning he just had a fever and a cough. But three days later, he developed rapid and shallow breathing, and a high fever. After being admitted to the hospital, he had severe pneumonia in both lungs and developed a bacterial infection while in the hospital. We’d like to remind people with chronic illnesses, especially people with conditions that are difficult to manage, to get vaccinated against the seasonal flu.
The four patients that died had all been infected by the Influenza A virus subtype H3N2. The CDC says people at high risk of severe symptoms, such as people with chronic illnesses and older adults, should get their flu shots as soon as possible.

目前COVID-19疫情趨緩，但民眾可別掉以輕心，因為流感的疫情依然不容小覷，疾管署表示，光是上週就出現了8例重症，其中有4例死亡。

“我們今天公布4例流感重症死亡個案，年齡從30幾歲到80幾歲。其中這位比較年輕的30歲幾個案，是一位住在北部的男性，本身是有糖尿病慢性病史，他在一月下旬發病，發病的時候一開始只有發燒跟咳嗽症狀，不過三天後發現有呼吸急促發高燒的情形，入院之後就已經發現有雙側嚴重肺炎，住院期間併發細菌感染。我們這邊呼籲說，本身有慢性疾病，特別是說控制上面比較不理想的民眾，流感季一定要記得接種公費流感疫苗。”
上周的8例流感重症案例，其中有4例死亡都是A型H3N2，疾管署提醒民眾如果有慢性病或高齡族群，在口罩解封的同時，最好也盡快施打疫苗，保護自身健康。
