
Ji’an Farmer’s Association in Hualien has been famous for ice cream for 23 years. But now, with a major upgrade to their factory, they’re more than doubled production capacity. And the Ji’an ice empire looks set to expand further. They plan to enable farmers from across the country to make ice cream with their own produce at the Ji’an ‘factory. But just how much of a money-spinner is ice cream? And does factory-made ice cream taste any good? Let’s go to Hualien to find out.

This little ice lolly contains a quarter of a pineapple. All the treats are made with real ingredients. The association earns NT$23 million a year from ice cream. That’s about 11% of their annual revenue. The association never expected frozen treats to become such a golden goose.
Last year, it spent more than NT$35 million on a brand-new processing factory, with upgraded, fully automated production lines. Production capacity has more than doubled.

In the past, we could only produce 2,000 to 3,000 ice lollies a day. Now we can produce 6,000 to 8,000.

Our ice cream business has grown about 20% in the last two years. We’ve invested in these production lines in recent years, and we hope they can grow to be 40-50% of our sales revenue.
Ji’an Farmers’ Association first started making frozen treats in 2000, and it’s still the only farmers’ association in Taiwan with an ice cream factory. Initially, it found success with the “rice ice cream” line. Later it launched many local flavors, like pumpkin, taro and pineapple. Now it plans to offer an ice production service for Taiwan’s 301 other farmers’ associations, enabling growers all over the country to make icy profits from their produce.

不管是芋頭還是花生,濃郁的口感,讓吉安農會的冰,任何時間都很受歡迎。

小小一支,內含1/4顆鳳梨果肉,每一種冰品都真材實料,也讓吉安農會的冰淇淋,一年能賺進2300萬,約佔供銷部年營收11%左右,儼然成為農會,最有前景的金雞母。
去年斥資3500多萬打造全新加工廠,冰品產線全面大升級,全自動化,產能提高2倍以上。

花蓮吉安農會,2000年開始生產冰品,是全台唯一設有冰品加工廠的農會。最初以"米冰淇淋"打響名號,後續研發不少在地農產冰品,有南瓜、芋頭、鳳梨等。還規劃要為全國其他301家農會代工,把全自動化冰品加工廠的附加效益,擴到最大。
