Round-the-country hamburger truck picks up fans nationwide

A Pingtung hamburger chef is running a round-the-country burger truck, and picking up fans nationwide. The truck serves a famous 15-inch burger that’s enough to feed a whole family. It’s a regular visitor at Pingtung orphanages, where Chen Wei-chiang teaches kids how to make their own burgers. As the truck makes it way all round the country, he’s enjoying taking his time and enjoying the sights. He’s joined by his assistant, a former orphanage resident who is getting to travel while picking up job skills for life.

A super-thick 3-centimeter patty sizzles on the grill. Then lettuce, onion and tomato join it in a bread roll.

The truck serves up gigantic 15-inch jumbo-burgers with eight patties inside. Every day they give one of these giants away to a random lucky customer.

Actually, to be honest, I love to see the customer’s smiling face – it’s that simple. I think I spent a bit too long in Pingtung, and I wanted to see if I could get out of Pingtung and I thought I’d do a round-the-island trip.

Pingtung native Chen Wei-chiang started an American-style restaurant 13 years ago, and nine years ago began his round-the-island food truck. He often takes the truck to orphanages, and hopes his story can inspire other young people.

First I wanted to go to orphanages. And then I thought that making hamburgers is quite fun for them. You need to put in the work, and then you can get a delicious hamburger – that’s the attitude I want to give them.

My boss opened this cart, at the orphanage where I was living. And this year, I was introduced to come and work here by the mother of a teacher at the orphanage.

Chen teaches his employees to make hamburgers while widening their horizons. This year Chen closed his bricks-and-mortar restaurant, to have more time to dedicate to the round-the-island truck, and to get to know each stop on the journey properly.

People think you don’t need capital to start a food truck. Let me tell you: I’ve spent more on the truck than I did on the restaurant – at least twice as much. To set up at a pitch in Taipei, I think expenses of NT$1,000 are good – that’s still NT$30,000 over 30 days. That includes accommodation and transport costs.

Nevertheless, he persists, with his young assistants’ help, serving up one delectable burger after another, to customers who increasingly seek the truck out on its travels.

一台來自屏東的環島餐車,專做美式漢堡,每到各個縣市停留,總是有不少饕客慕名而來,除了一手掌握的份量,還有15吋的巨無霸漢堡,一次裝進8塊肉排,讓人看了十分驚豔。而老闆環島餐車背後,有一段溫馨勵志的故事,一起來看看。

3公分超厚牛肉排,在鐵板上煎烤,香氣四溢。接著在麵包上鋪上生菜、洋蔥、番茄等配料。

這家漢堡餐車準備了15吋巨無霸漢堡包,一次鋪上8塊牛肉排,每天抽一份送客人。

“其實我說真的,滿喜歡看到客人的笑容,就是這麼簡單。我就覺得說在屏東待太久了,想說是不是可以離開屏東,想說我用環島的方式。”

來自屏東的陳韋強,13年前開美式餐廳,9年前開始開著餐車環島。除此之外,他也經常到育幼院服務,希望自己的生命故事,能夠激勵更多孩子。

“一開始是想要去育幼院,然後我覺得做漢堡,對他們來說比較有吸引力。要自己去付出,才能得到一個美味的漢堡,我是希望給他們一個這樣的觀念。”

“老闆有開這台餐車,然後在我住的那間育幼院,今年育幼院老師的媽媽,介紹我到這邊來做。”

帶著員工一邊賣漢堡,一邊開拓眼界,為了有更多時間,好好認識每個縣市,今年陳韋強收起店面,全心投入環島餐車。

“人家覺得說餐車不用本錢,我跟你講,做餐車花得比開店還要多,至少1倍以上吧。在台北一個場地,一天1000元我覺得很合理,那30天下來也有3萬吧,包括住宿,包括運費。”

一個個美式漢堡,吸引民眾慕名而來,餐車也承載著年輕人的夢想,勇往直前。
