Today we take you to meet Liao Shu-chen, a former music teacher who’s 90 years young. After retiring, she began learning ballet, art, and how to do a headstand. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to Liao to discover how she’s making the most of her golden years.

Liao Shu-chen dances gracefully to the music. Liao is 90 years old this year, but to her, age is just a number. She’s just as agile and flexible as ever, and has been studying ballet for over a year.

Besides learning ballet, she’s also mastered the headstand.

The headstand pose is good for brain atrophy and blood circulation. I slowly learned it at home. I was scared at first and would fall, but now I am stable and I can count to 100.

Her daily routine comprises exercising and painting. She loves art and has held several exhibitions in Taiwan and abroad.

After I retired, I had the opportunity to learn different things. I signed up to learn ink painting. I went to the social education center to learn ink painting. I feel very happy every day because I like art very much. I paint with ink, paint with watercolors, and go to the sports center every day. In the morning, I move around at home and draw pictures, and then visit the sports center in the afternoon. If I get home a little earlier, I do finger exercises and play the piano. Then, I rest in the evening and watch TV and the news.

In her golden years, Liao teaches piano classes occasionally. Before her retirement, she was an elementary school music teacher.

What are the secrets to a fulfilling retirement? Liao points to exercise, good life habits, a social life, and continuous learning.

Young people look at their phones too much. Then they go to bed too late at night. We have to rest before 11 o’clock because that’s what’s dictated by our biological clock. We must pay attention to our diet. I see queues at drink shops. That’s not very good. People should exercise, maintain good living habits, and socialize. Don’t stay at home watching TV and sleeping.

A few times a week, Liao exercises with her friends and granddaughter at a park. Her granddaughter Hsiao Yu-wen is a fitness trainer for older adults.

The biggest thing I learned from her is that you should never stop learning. It’s so true. My grandma was a teacher, so she needs to keep improving in her profession. Even in retirement, she doesn’t let her life become empty.

I didn’t know how to swim, and I was very afraid of water. Sogo had a gym and a swimming pool, so I started to learn on my own. Because of my shin splints, I used to suffer from back pain and couldn’t walk. Rehabilitation didn’t help, so I went swimming. I now swim freestyle and backstroke. After that, my back recovered.

Liao hopes to inspire everyone to be a lifelong learner and live a healthy life.

90歲還會倒立! 退休教師廖淑珍活到老學到老

今天帶您來認識一位90歲的長者廖淑珍,她以前是小學音樂老師,退休後,開始學習芭蕾、繪畫,甚至倒立。來聽聽她分享自己多彩多姿的退休生活。

伴隨音樂翩翩起舞,她是90歲的廖淑珍,對她來說,年齡不過是個數字,身體依然靈活,學芭蕾舞已經一年多了。

除了學芭蕾,她還會倒立。

"倒立式對腦萎縮還不錯, 血液循環還不錯。我就自己慢慢在家裡學,開始會怕,也會摔下去,不過現在穩了,我數到100才下來。 "

廖淑珍每天都會運動和畫畫,她熱愛藝術,曾多次在台灣及國外舉辦展覽。

"退休以後,我剛好有機會學,我就開始報名參加水墨畫,去社教館學水墨畫。我覺得很快樂,每天都很快樂,因為藝術方面就很喜歡,水墨畫、水彩畫。還有去運動中心,那些都是每天都是一樣,早上就是在家裡動一動,畫圖,然後下午去運動中心,回來早一點手指運動,彈鋼琴,然後,晚上休息看看電視及新聞報導。"

廖淑珍以前是小學音樂老師,退休後,她偶爾教教鋼琴。

"我的職業是小學音樂老師,我很喜歡學鋼琴,我是自學的。"

如何享有充實的退休生活?廖淑珍認為,要運動、養成良好的生活習慣、有社交生活,並持續學習。

"年輕人看手機看太多了,然後晚上太晚睡了,11點以前一定要休息,因為我們的生理時鐘11點一定要休息。一定飲食方面要注意,現在我看到排隊都是飲料店,其實那個不太好。運動、生活習慣,尤其人都要有社交活動,不要一直待在家裡看電視睡覺。"

廖淑珍每週都會與朋友和孫女在公園運動,孫女蕭郁文是銀髮族健身教練。

"從她身上學到最大的就是活到老學到老,這是真的。阿媽以前是老師,所以她在這個職業需要一直精益求精,就算退休她也不會讓自己的生活空虛。"

"游泳本來是不會的,很怕水的人。百貨公司有健身房,那裡有游泳池,我就開始自學,我為了我的筋骨。以前腰痠背痛,腳不能走了,復健沒好,去游泳,自由式和仰式,這樣就好了。"

廖淑珍鼓勵大家都能終身學習,過著健康的生活。
