President Tsai Ing-wen met a delegation of Washington-based think tank scholars on Monday. During the reception, she thanked U.S. scholars for their longstanding interest in the Taiwan Strait. Bonnie Glaser, of the German Marshall Fund, applauded Tsai for her steady leadership over the past eight years. Glaser said she believed Taiwan-U.S. relations will stay “rock-solid” under the next DPP administration.

Tsai Ing-wen
President
Just a month away on April 10, we will mark the 45th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act. Since the enactment of the Taiwan Relations Act, the international landscape has undergone many changes. Today, this legislation has become an important cornerstone for maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your longstanding interest in the situation across the Taiwan Strait. Your research reports have given the international community a better understanding of Taiwan and the critical role it plays in the region.

Bonnie Glaser
German Marshall Fund Indo-Pacific Program director
Throughout these eight years, your leadership has been steadfast. You have preserved peace in the Taiwan Strait, you have protected Taiwan’s democracy, and preserved the freedoms that are cherished by the Taiwanese people. The U.S.-Taiwan relationship will remain rock-solid when you pass on the leadership baton to your successor.

Tsai said the U.S. and Taiwan were not just partners in security, but in economics and trade as well. She called for advancing the bilateral cooperation in areas including the digital economy, emerging technologies, and telecommunications security.
