18-year-olds to pay taxes on annual income over NT$423,000

18-year-olds to pay taxes on annual income over NT$423,000

2024-04-17

Last year, the legal age of adulthood was revised from 20 to 18 years old. That could affect how you file taxes this year. If you’re a parent of an 18-year-old, you can no longer claim the child as a dependent unless certain criteria are met. For example, if your child is a full-time student, or has a physical or mental disability.

If you’re an 18-year-old, you’ll have to file your own tax return. An 18-year-old who earns less than NT$424,000 annually will generally not owe any taxes. According to one accountant’s calculations, filing separately can save a family money on taxes, if the family has an 18-year-old who earns more than NT$324,000 a year.
