The uniforms of the Inauguration Day ushers have been unveiled. For the first time in Taiwan history, female ushers will be sporting trousers. The sleek tan trousers will be paired with a white blouse to exude a professional air. Designer Chasel Lu said the fashion choice aims to challenge gender stereotypes. Let’s hear from him.

It’s not because skirts and dresses are good or bad. It’s because historically, trousers have represented a challenge to male authority. Slowly, fashion has evolved to the point where trousers can be freely worn by women. Because the theme of the ceremony is “weaving a nation, advancing democracy,” we wanted to deliver a fresh vibe. The blouse features a triangle cutout in the neckline. It has a youthful look, but at the same time, avoids the issue of being too revealing. The look is a fusion of old and new, and it’s not specific to any ethnic group, because Taiwan is a diverse society.
Male ushers will wear a black suit with a tan tie to match the women. All the uniforms are made entirely from breathable, made-in-Taiwan fabrics, for maximum comfort on Inauguration Day.
