Free ferry service runs between Yilan and Hualien amid severed roads and rail routes

2024-07-28

Typhoon Gaemi caused damage throughout Taiwan last week, and brought landslides that obstructed travel on the east coast. Over the weekend, workers had nearly cleared a section of railway when their efforts were halted by a heavy rainstorm. With both roads and railways out of commission, authorities are now running a free ferry service between Yilan and Hualien counties. They hope to have normal travel links resumed by next weekend, but for now, the ferry is a welcome relief for local residents.

Rocks and other debris cover a section of railway track along Taiwan’s east coast. Cleanup of debris on the track from last week’s typhoon was nearly finished, and workers had planned to restore service on the line on Monday. However, heavy rain on Saturday afternoon brought those plans to a halt.

Typhoon Gaemi last week left a section of track between Heren and Chongde stations unusable, but the track was nearly cleared at the start of the weekend. Workers now say that Saturday’s unexpected rainstorm will delay reopening of the track until Saturday next week. Meanwhile, sections of highway in the area were also obstructed by landslides caused by the typhoon. The transportation ministry has launched temporary ferry services to allow people in Hualien and Yilan to get around.

On Sunday morning, crowds began to show up at Suao Port to take advantage of the ferry, arriving with packed bags and family members. Ferry service was provided by Matsu-based vessel the “Xin Tai Ma Lun.”

Ferry passenger
I need to head back to Hualien for work. The road is out, and I don’t want to loop around the island. Even the railway down to Hualien is out. So, I think for now the sea route is the better option.

The free ferry service will run for three days until July 30, and depending on the situation, officials will decide whether to continue it afterward. Whatever happens, the central and local governments said they would ensure that local residents can travel safely.
