Gold approaches record high, further gains likely

2024-08-13

Demand for gold is surging, pushing prices close to the record high. Spot gold rose 1.7% on Monday, hitting US$2,472 an ounce. Experts say that, as early as this week, gold could break the historical record of US$2,483. Ahead of a likely U.S. rate cut next month, gold could continue to climb and stabilize above US$2,500.

The rally in gold is also fueled by Middle East tensions. The White House warns that Iran could attack Israel as early as this week, as retaliation for Israel’s assassination of a top Hamas leader.
