
In recent years, a day trip up the main peak of Yushan has become a popular hike. It’s a very long trip, but it can be squeezed into 12 to16 hours, by a fit and strong hiker. However, authorities warn that there have already been several accidents on the peak this year. Some hikers may be tempted to go up when their body isn’t up to the task. Experts warn that if you’re not feeling 100% on the day of your hike, it’s better not to risk it.

Paiyun Lodge, near the peak, has just 116 beds, which are allocated by lottery. That’s the only way to make a two-day overnight trip up here. So, many hikers who don’t win the lottery choose instead to make a simple trip up and down the mountain in one day.
But even just the walk from the trailhead to the main peak is a 21.8 km round trip. Adding in walking to the parking lot, and you add 6 km. It’s a 12-to-16-hour walk. Hikers normally set out at 2 or 3 a.m. in the pitch black. If they don’t reach Paiyun Lodge by a certain time, it means their strength isn’t quite up to the peak today. It’s not something to push.

Our colleagues at Paiyun Lodge will notice, if you haven’t passed the lodge by 10 a.m., and they’ll urge you to head back down again.
The national park authorities stress that there have already been five accidents involving hikers on day trips this year: three cases of exhaustion and two of sprained ankles. All were related to a lack of fitness. When descending the mountain, it’s particularly easy to make a wobbly step or feel your legs give out and get into trouble.

Hiker
On high mountains, you’re afraid of the cold temperatures or rain. If your physical condition on the day doesn’t allow you to go up, then I’d recommend people to find the courage of “the better part of valor is discretion.”
Authorities remind hikers planning a day trip up Yushan that proper fitness training beforehand is a must. As winter approaches, heading up the mountain carelessly is no joke.

近年來很多山友,選擇單日攻頂玉山主峰,不過,玉管處統計,光今年,就有五起單攻山難事件,分析原因,都跟山友們的體能不足有關。玉管處提醒民眾,行前必須做好鍛鍊,不要貿然選擇單攻,要確保體能良好,才能安全往返。
山友一步步往上爬,登上玉山主峰那一刻,感覺自己完成一項壯舉。
由於排雲山莊只有116個床位,必須抽到床位,才能進行二天一夜登山行程,因此很多沒有抽到床位的山友,會選擇單攻。
但從登山口到主峰,全程往返長達21.8公里,外加從停車場到登山口,來回還有6公里,大約得走12至16個小時。通常凌晨2、3點,就得摸黑出發,一旦走到排雲山莊的時間拖太晚;代表體力,可能無法完成單日往返,千萬不要勉強。

“我們排雲山莊的同仁也會注意,如果你(上午)10點以前,沒有通過排雲山莊,會勸導你下山。”
玉管處指出,今年玉山單攻,已經發生五起山難,其中三件是過度疲勞求救,二件是腳踝扭傷,都是跟體能不佳有關。尤其是下山時,容易因為腿軟或是沒有踩穩,而發生意外。

“行進間的一個疲勞,造成肌肉拉傷,或者是抽筋的事故。”

“高山的話,怕說有低溫的問題,或是遇到下雨。那一天的身體狀況,如果不允許的話,還是建議大家,就是要勇於撤退的勇氣。”
玉管處提醒想要單攻的山友,行前一定要做好體能鍛鍊,千萬不要貿然上山。
