Exhibition opens on the dangers of superbugs resistant to antibiotics

2024-11-04

The World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week is happening this month, from Nov. 18 to Nov. 24. Ahead of the campaign, the Tri-Service General Hospital is hosting an exhibition on the matter with interactive exhibits and educational videos. The event is held in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and the Infectious Diseases Society of Taiwan. It aims to raise awareness about the dangers of antimicrobial resistance and how to mitigate risks. Let’s hear from the organizers.

Chuang Jen-hsiang
Centers for Disease Control
If drug-resistant bacteria spread, the number of days people spend in medical institutions will increase, and so will medical expenses. The number of effective drugs we can use to treat disease will decrease, posing a risk to patients’ lives.

Lin Te-yu
Tri-Service General Hospital
Clinics use quite a lot of antibiotics. When you catch a cold, it might be a viral infection, yet they still prescribe antibiotics, that is, antimicrobial drugs. I’d like to remind everyone, if you have a viral infection, there is no need for antibiotics.

Chang Shan-chwen
Joint Commission of Taiwan
The “Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence” is a plan executed by the Joint Commission of Taiwan. We hope to enhance public awareness about this to make progress on this issue.

The misuse and overuse of antibiotics has caused a global antimicrobial resistance crisis. The World Health Organization predicts that over the next 30 years, resistance to antibiotics will kill one person every three seconds. Health experts have launched an awareness campaign with four don’t regarding antibiotics. Don’t ask your doctor for them, don’t purchase them without a prescription, don’t share them, and don’t stop taking them sooner than indicated by your doctor.
