Taiwanese-American doctors promote US-Taiwan cooperation

On Wednesday, the North American Taiwanese Medical Association, or NATMA held its 40th anniversary meeting and 2nd US-Taiwan healthcare collaboration forum in Taiwan. Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim was the guest-of-honor and expressed gratitude to the association for their international pro bono work. Let’s hear from the vice president.

Our NATMA team has volunteered many times in Taiwan’s diplomatic ally countries, and even in Ukraine. This not only makes Taiwan highly visible on the international stage, but embodies the spirit of “Taiwan can help and Taiwan is helping.”

We’ve done pro bono work 26 times internationally, and voiced support for Taiwan at the World Health Organization seven times. This is also our main objective. Most important is to connect second- and third-generation overseas Taiwanese physicians, to do fundamental work for President Lai’s policy to enhance healthcare in Taiwan.

We the first generation overseas have fought a good battle. Taiwan is a country that has it hard. So I hope, and I expect, the second generation will not only deepen healthcare exchanges with Taiwan, but also come back and help the motherland when Taiwan needs helps, like the Israelis and Jewish people in the US.

Vice President Hsiao also presented an award to more than 60 Taiwanese-American physicians. On Thursday, the doctors will visit President Lai to discuss plans for US-Taiwan cooperation, to enhance healthcare in Taiwan.

Conscripts train with domestically developed rocket launcher

After mandatory military service was lengthened to one year, conscripts now also have to undergo a more rigorous training regimen. On Wednesday, they did a live-fire exercise with the domestically developed Kestral rocket launcher. The session also incorporated malefaction troubleshooting to improve troops’ combat readiness.

The troops each carry a Kestral rocket launcher. After taking their spots, shots are fired at the target with each command.

The rockets all hit their targets 200 meters away. It’s quite a sight to behold.

Actually firing a Kestral feels very different from exercises during training. It’s my first time undertaking a mission at the army base, and thanks to the mission, I got to really experience firing a Kestral.

I treated it like any routine exercise. It’s not really that heavy.

The Kestral rocket launcher was developed by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology. Its scope has a zoom factor of 5x, while the effective shooting range is 200m. With the Kestral, a rocket can penetrate low-carbon steel by up to 40 cm and homogenous steel by up to 27cm. The external and internal parts of the rocket are a uniform structure, making it unusable if launched and found by the enemy.

During this round of live-fire exercises, troops were also trained to troubleshoot malfunctions.

Troubleshooting malfunctions has always been a part of our training program. We always do exercises on troubleshooting. Because it’s a new launcher we’re working with, we’ll also ask that the National Chung-Shan Institute inspect the malfunction, and find out the root cause, so we can improve.

The armed forces are beefing up on all fronts. Conscripts now have one year of mandatory service, and it’s the first time they’re doing a live-fire exercise with the Kestral rocket launcher. All this serves to improve troops’ combat readiness to respond to current cross-strait tensions.

Civic groups protest pedestrian overpass demolition

The issue of whether or not to demolish the pedestrian overpass at the Heping-Xinsheng intersection in Taipei has sparked a heated debate. The city government has temporarily suspended its demolition plan amid calls for its preservation. However, Mayor Chiang Wan-an pointed out the overpass is barely used by anyone and has urged officials to move forward with the plan, provided there is adequate communication. On Wednesday, the organizer of the "Save the Heping-Xinsheng Overpass" campaign spoke out, asking the mayor to fulfill his promise of continuing dialogue.

Colorful prints and graffiti fill the Heping-Xinsheng bridge. The pedestrian overpass was scheduled to be demolished on Monday, but the plan was suspended amid a sense of reluctance and nostalgia. For many, this overpass is more than just a pedestrian bridge. It’s a symbol of memories.

If you’re feeling down at night, and it’s too late to go somewhere else, this area is very bright and safe, so people often come to this overpass. Some just sit here and space out, while others, like dog walkers, also find this bridge useful.

The Civil Engineers Association has already come to inspect the house, take photos, and assess how the situation will be once the overpass is demolished. They’re checking if the walls might crack or if any other issues could arise, in case the ground might sink.

Standing for 42 years, the Heping-Xinsheng overpass has become a local landmark. On it, there are now wedding photos taken there years ago, as well as colorful sticky notes with heartfelt messages expressing the desire to preserve the bridge. A “Save the Bridge” campaign was launched in response to the city government’s decision to move forward with demolition. Opponents of the demolition claim that although the mayor had promised continued communication, they have yet to see any genuine effort or sincerity in fulfilling that commitment.

Large-scale events are held at Da’an Forest Park, which is a designated disaster prevention park. Having an additional overpass could provide more options for evacuation, allowing people to move more quickly in case of an emergency. If a disaster or urgent situation were to occur and an evacuation is needed, having an extra route would definitely help with crowd dispersal and ensure a smoother evacuation process.

The Heping-Xinsheng overpass sometimes has an actual usage rate of less than 10%. If former Mayor Huang Ta-chou had not demolished the Chunghwa Market back then, there wouldn’t be today’s Zhonghua Road, nor the bustling Ximen District. When it comes to the right thing, we’ll stick to it, speak boldly, and act decisively.

The Transportation Department pointed out that the four supporting pillars of the overpass at its intersections are like “large A-pillars for vehicles,” creating visual blind spots when turning. It’s a tough chasm between collective memory and safety concerns.

‘WE ARE TEAM TAIWAN’ TV debut showcases immigrant stories

The in-depth program "We Are Team Taiwan," produced by the National Immigration Agency, will make its highly anticipated return this Friday. On Wednesday, the production team held a press conference at the FTV headquarters, featuring a state-of-the-art LED virtual studio. They invited everyone to join in witnessing the stories of migrants to Taiwan.

The lion dance troupe from Taoyuan’s Shanjiao Elementary School performs onstage. This is the presser for an upcoming in-depth program “WE ARE TEAM TAIWAN” produced by the National Immigration Agency and funded by the New Immigrant Development Fund.

At the press conference, special attention was given to the children of immigrants, as the program will continue its previous theme of showcasing the touching stories of immigrants putting down roots in Taiwan. Moving forward, more children of immigrants will take the spotlight, bringing fresh energy to the show.

This season’s program focuses specifically on the new developments among new immigrants in Taiwan. They have integrated into Taiwanese society, worked hard on this land, and, like us residents who’ve been here longer, faced many challenges and difficulties. The program is set to debut on Friday, offering a chance to learn about the new members of Taiwanese society.

Presser for firefighter calendar delights audience

On Wednesday morning, six Australian firefighters teamed up with their Taiwanese counterparts to attend the press conference for the 2025 Taiwan/Australia Firefighter Calendar. Not only did they show off their well-toned physiques, they also participated in a fitness showdown. In the end, the Taiwanese team emerged victorious with a 2-1 win.

They were meticulous with every detail from the moment the trip was arranged. Even when we arrived at the airport, they were there for us every step of the way, ensuring everything was perfectly planned and handled with great care. During the photo shoot, they also provided us with professional guidance throughout the process.\

Back in March, the Trade and Investment Queensland invited six Taiwanese firefighters to travel to the Gold Coast, Australia. While there, they engaged in a mutual exchange of disaster response experiences with local firefighters. The group also took the opportunity to participate in the photo shoot for a 2025 charity calendar. This collaboration not only aims to strengthen the friendly ties between Taiwan and Australia but also hopes to further enhance the mutual capabilities for disaster response and prevention between the two countries.

We actually have a long-standing collaborative relationship with Australia. Just last week, we also sent a team of special rescue personnel to Australia to learn about the re-assessment process for the international certification of Australia’s special rescue teams.

Taiwanese firefighters went head-to-head with the Australians in an intense fitness showdown. In the end, the Taiwanese team triumphed with a 2-1 victory. The friendly competition not only strengthened the bond between the two sides but also gave the audience a visual treat.

Tainan temple digs out of storage a priceless embroidered flag

One of Taiwan’s oldest temples is creating a record of its historical artifacts, and preparing them for display in a new museum. Shang Di Temple in Tainan City’s Xiaying District has dug out of obscurity an almost 10-meter-long flag. It’s covered in exquisite embroidery, with many details full of religious and historical significance. It may be the longest such flag in Taiwan. Historians say the flag, as well as many other artifacts at the temple, are important both for religious reasons and for broader cultural heritage.

This nearly 10-meter-long temple procession flag has been locked up for decades. Now it’s seen the light of day again as part of a reorganization of the temple’s artifacts.

This flag was carried at the front of a procession, at the head of a team inspecting the temple’s precinct with the deity Xuanwu. It’s embroidered front and back, with embellishments rich in historical lore. The figures and horse riders on the front are made of very detailed 3D embroidery. Most temple flags nowadays are embroidered by computer programs. Handmade embroidery like this is more and more unusual.

One side illustrates “Journey to the West,” and the other, “Investiture of the Gods.” Every stitch is so fine. And the design is 3D.

The temple is preparing a new museum hall, to feature the procession flag, as well as ancient incense burners, calligraphy inscriptions, Cochin ceramics, and clay and wooden sculptures. Almost all are precious artifacts dating back to the Japanese colonial era or the early years of the ROC. The temple has recently begun to open up the store where they’re kept, to photograph and document them. It plans to open its museum hall to the public at the end of this year.

Our deity, the Great Emperor, is quite extravagant. His troops and the objects he uses are larger in scale.

The artifacts housed at ancient temples are an important part of Taiwan’s folk history. Historians say that these ancient temples are not just significant for their religious purposes; they should be conserved as an integral part of Taiwanese culture.

If we, ourselves, arrange these artifacts, then firstly we’ll feel a deep connection with them, and secondly we’ll be really careful, because these objects belong to our own faith.

Shang Di Temple was founded more than 300 years ago, and its primary deity is the “Great Emperor,” also known as Xuanwu. A flag like this one is full of craftsmanship, historical significance, and religious meaning. It even includes many interesting details related to the daily life of bygone generations: there’s much more here than meets the eye.
