Chinese netizens harass immigrant content creators sharing life in Taiwan

2024-11-11

Chinese immigrants in Taiwan report harassment from their compatriots in China, simply for creating online content about their lives in Taiwan. One vlogger reports that her words of praise for Taiwan have been taken as insults to China by nationalistic netizens. Another says she was called scum of the nation after taking part in events held by the Taiwan government. DPP Lawmaker Huang Jie says the hate comments come from a place of jealousy.

A China-born vlogger discusses things she likes about living in Taiwan. Online, Chinese nationalists are slamming her video, saying she is insulting her motherland.

Another Chinese immigrant who took part in events held by Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council and the Straits Exchange Foundation was also harassed and insulted, called scum of the nation. A DPP lawmaker says Chinese nationalist internet users, known as “Little Pinks” are simply jealous.

Exercising your freedom of speech and living freely is an everyday affair in Taiwan. But these Little Pinks can’t take it. Regardless of whether the comments come from the Little Pinks themselves, or whether it was all orchestrated by the Chinese Communist Party, I believe jealousy is at the core of the issue. Perhaps they are worried that more people in China will want to have a democratic and free society like in Taiwan.

A scholar says the videos highlighting the differences between China and Taiwan could help counter China’s domestic propaganda and reverse brainwashing.

The videos show that living in Taiwan is not as painful as China makes it out to be. That people aren’t so poor, and that some absurd claims are not so absurd. And they open a window into Taiwan. Accounts that discuss Taiwan’s international oppression, Taiwan-US relations, or Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, can be punished or banned by China’s internet police.

The scholar says that despite its efforts, China’s success at filtering online content remains quite limited.
