Taichung doubles the bang for your buck with voucher program

Taichung is doubling the bang for your buck, with the comeback of a popular voucher program to encourage consumer spending. The campaign allows you to double the value of your cash. With NT$100, you can get NT$200 worth of vouchers. This year, 350,000 vouchers will be distributed from May 2 to May 4, and they’ll be valid until May 8.

With the press off a button, Taichung’s annual shopping voucher program kicks off. Now in its third edition, the program is a small joy for the people, stretching their cash further. Pay NT$100 and get NT$200 in vouchers!

With generous discounts from vendors, it’s no wonder that the lines to exchange vouchers stretch long into the distance. To avoid having people wait in the scorching summer heat, this year, the event will be starting earlier, on May 2.

The vouchers will be distributed over three days, from May 2 to 4, Friday to Sunday. They will be available at 107 locations throughout the city. They are valid from May 2 to May 8.

The vouchers don’t just boost consumption among Taichung locals. Plenty of people from other places in Taiwan, and even from overseas are joining the shopping bonanza.

New Taipei City to open new art museum on April 25

A new museum in Yingge District, New Taipei is set to open on April 25. To celebrate the opening of the New Taipei City Art Museum, for six consecutive weekends, starting April 26, the city government has arranged activities for people of all ages in the museum’s outdoor park. They include performances by the renowned Cloud Gate Dance Theater, and on the opening weekend, there will be a dazzling fireworks show. Our very own Stephany Yang gives us a preview.

A dazzling fireworks show is about to light up the night. The New Taipei City Art Museum will officially open its doors to the public on April 25. To celebrate, a series of events has been arranged. On the first weekend on April 26 and 27, a five-minute fireworks display will be held at 8:30 p.m. The fireworks display is composed of five themes to symbolize the museum’s inaugural voyage.

By combining the theme of color with the dynamic motion of painting, we hope to express the dazzling brilliance of art through waterfall-like, dynamic fireworks.

This time, our fireworks will be set off across an area extending from the sports center behind me to the upper part of the tent. The fireworks will have staggered timing, creating an effect of highs and lows in the display.

In addition to the fireworks, from April 26 to June 1, the New Taipei City Cultural Affairs Department will host activities for six consecutive weekends at the outdoor park of the New Taipei City Art Museum. These activities include light sculpture performances, themed markets, and other events, including performances by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and FOCASA Circus Art.

We hope to show that the museum is not merely a building, but rather a platform that carries life.

The museum has been designed by renowned Taiwanese architect Yao Jen-hsi. Its exterior is made up of 3,166 intertwined cylindrical aluminum tubes.

Hairdresser and amateur farmer grows Taiwan’s largest strawberry

Can you imagine working as a hairdresser and a farmer? Beautician Hsu Mei-ling answered to both callings. Although she’s only been growing strawberries for four years, she happened to grow the largest ones in all of Taiwan. Her family has all joined in the strawberry trade now, with her husband helping to install an automatic irrigation system. Thanks to their hard work, Hsu produces a delicious fruit that has a sweet aftertaste.

Ever so gently, a farmer snips a giant strawberry off at the stem. The scale jumps to 244g, shocking everyone present.

Held up next to her head, it covers half of her face. At 11cm long, 9cm wide, and 6cm tall, this fruit has been called the “giant of the strawberry world.” But the farmer responsible for this impressive fruit is actually new to the field.

I’ve only been growing strawberries for a very short amount of time, since I work for about 12 hours a day. When people heard I wanted to go compete, they laughed at me. I thought their laughter was adorable. I figured, no big deal, you can laugh all you want.

Hsu Mei-ling is a hairdresser with a penchant for trying things out and following her interests. This year, she participated in a competition for the largest strawberry in Taiwan. Compared with veteran farmers, Hsu is a greenhorn with only four years of experience. But her strawberry still ended up stealing the show.

I cared for that one very well. When it rained, I put a clear umbrella over it. I know how to grow strawberries because of my sister’s friend. Although she’s passed away now, her spirit lingers on. She thought strawberries were the most interesting plant to grow.

Hsu started planting Taiwanese varietals, then introduced some Japanese ones as well. Through attentive care, she was able to grow this giant strawberry, which may be a hybrid.

My wife signed up for the largest strawberry competition. I didn’t really believe she would get first. I should really believe my wife.

She’s an amateur, but even an amateur can grow a strawberry even more amazing than the professionals. It’s so impressive. But she actually works hard every day. After work, she still has to come tend to the strawberries.

Using fertilizer mixed by herself and her own irrigation system, Hsu was able to grow this giant strawberry. The competition is continuing until the end of April, but whether or not her 244g strawberry retains the title, Hsu is walking away with a sense of accomplishment in her achievement.

Former shoemaker creates eco-friendly aquaponics farm

Mr. Chiu from Miaoli’s Zhuolan Township comes from a family of shoemakers. But four years ago, he switched careers and bought an orange orchard, which he converted into an aquaponics farm. Using imported equipment, he built it up from nothing over the span of a year. Since he uses organic methods, the vegetables that he grows are well loved by his clients.

You just need to rinse the lettuce in water, let it dry, and then add a bit of olive oil and vinegar for this simple salad to be ready to eat. The farmer who grew this lettuce used to make shoes, but decided to switch fields. Chiu Yen-lin shared the story behind his big career change.

It’s mostly because of the pandemic. At that time, my dad had a plot of land on the mountain. We had a vision to try out aquaponics, so we wanted to try it out.

All the equipment you can see, from the greenhouse to the fish farm, was planned and installed by Chiu with financial help from his father. It took more than a year to set up the basics.

Fish are pretty sensitive to water quality, so we first went with Taiwanese tilapia since it’s easier to raise. It can provide stable and sufficient nutrients to grow the vegetables. So it’s a very ecofriendly system.

The fish raised in the ponds must be selected carefully. Taiwanese tilapia, which are easy to raise, hardy, and marketable, was Chiu’s top choice. The manure from the fish farm is then processed through a bacteria-rich biofilter to create plant nutrients, then pumped into the greenhouse in a process that is eco-friendly and nontoxic. Chiu uses imported seeds from Europe to grow 13 types of vegetables. Different techniques are needed for the different growing seasons.

The quality from this farm is excellent. It’s all grown by hand without any toxins. So our restaurant really values their quality.

Chiu said that in the age of AI, many industries are incorporating high-tech analysis to reduce labor needs and increase production. In the future, he hopes to also bring aquaponics into the high-tech world.

Contemporary images and their many interpretations

A new exhibition exploring the evolution of reportage photography is currently being held at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. It features works by renowned artists from Taiwan and around the world. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to the photographers to learn more about what they do.

Chou Ching-hui’s series of works centers around stories of children with disabilities. Chou spent several years interviewing 70 families, children, teachers, and volunteers. Before shooting, he listened to the transcripts, created hand-drawn sketches, wrote scripts, and selected props. He completed an installation of large-scale composite images telling the stories of children with disabilities and their families and teachers. Visitors can put on a headset and listen to audio recordings of the interviews.

This work combined audio of interviews with parents telling their own stories. My work started from interviews. When I was working on this project, I interviewed more than 70 families, as well as special education teachers, psychologists, and family members. After the interviews, I typed it into a manuscript, which has 760,000 words. I then grouped the 760,000 words into topics about education, how to face life and death, and religion. Each photo combined the stories of five or six families. It mainly discusses some of the difficulties faced by families with mental disabilities in this society, how they face medical treatment, how they face death, and how they face religion.

Hsieh San-tai spent several years on Green Island, shooting the untold stories of political prisoners and prisoners of conscience on Green Island in the 1950s.

For around two years or so, I photographed over 80 victims of political persecution in Taiwan. When photographing political prisoners, many of them didn’t trust each other and were even divided because they had been forced to confess and were tortured. The imprisonment of so many people, especially during the transitional justice in Taiwan at that time, is a very important part of the history of Taiwan.

A new exhibition exploring the evolution of reportage photography is currently on display at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. Ranging from the analog era to the digital age, the exhibition examines the impact of technology on image content and production.

The exhibition focuses on contemporary real-time images, how it began with reportage photography, which focuses on contemporary issues, and then gradually declined as a result of the rapid advancement of science and technology. You can see many manifestations of contemporary image creation in the exhibition, including photography, photography installations, and action plans from photographic perspectives. I think you can feel the power of images as photography became a part of contemporary art creation.

The "Theater of the Times: Contemporary Images and Their Many Interpretations" exhibition is currently being held at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum until July 13.
