Premier Cho Jung-tai on Monday went to visit the caucuses of the KMT, TPP and DPP to discuss a NT$410 billion special budget proposed by the Executive Yuan. The KMT and TPP have sharply criticized the budget, especially due to a NT$100 billion subsidy for Taipower. But one KMT lawmaker, Fu Kun-chi, was uncharacteristically soft-spoken during the meeting with Cho.

Cho visited the KMT, DPP and TPP party caucuses to discuss the details of the special budget, and garner support from all in the Legislature. Though the meeting with the TPP caucus was tense to say the least, the sit-down with KMT caucus whip Fu Kun-chi was surprisingly pleasant.

Fu was all smiles, and even took off the lid from Cho’s coffee, before doing a little toast. He even proclaimed himself as a defender of the Executive Yuan.

Ruling and opposition parties should be in harmony, as that leads to prosperity. The special budget is for pressing issues. But for non-pressing matters, perhaps we could just propose an additional regular budget? We are more than willing to consider options and support the Executive Yuan.

Why is Fu Kun-chi being so obsequious now? Everyone knows that the recall campaign against him will surely clear the second stage and move on to a recall vote.

The shift in Fu’s attitude raised eyebrows in the DPP. They urged him not to say one thing and do another, perhaps in an attempt to save himself from a recall. Though the visit wasn’t as confrontational as expected, the matter still has to be discussed in the Legislative Yuan.

因應關稅戰，行政院通過4100億特別條例，今天院長卓榮泰到立院拜會各黨團，爭取支持，民眾黨團猛轟不該撥補台電1千億，國民黨團同樣不支持，但到了黨團總召傅崐萁發言，態度大轉變，幫卓榮泰開咖啡蓋，兩人舉杯互敬，傅崐萁還說願意協商，要當行政院後盾，但綠營就勸最好別說一套、做一套。

“行政院提出來這個版本根本就是大灌水。26號為什麼有20萬的民眾上街去?砍掉的台電撥補又把它放回來。”

不給來拜會的行政院長卓榮泰好臉色，張啟楷劈頭開罵4100億特別條例，尤其對於撥補台電1千億，藍白很不滿意。

卓榮泰拜會藍綠白黨團，一一解釋，爭取特別條例最大支持，對比民眾黨團砲聲隆隆，國民黨團總召傅崐萁態度放軟。

笑臉盈盈，還幫卓榮泰開咖啡蓋，兩人舉杯互敬，傅崐萁甚至說要當行政院後盾。

“朝野以和為貴，家和萬事興。特別條例是非常緊急事項來提的，那如果非緊急事項的部分，是不是可以提追加預算?我們都非常歡迎樂於來檢討，來做行政院的後盾。”

“傅崐萁為什麼到目前為止，要開始裝乖討拍，事實上大家都知道二階罷免連署，應該就是可以確定安全過關，接下來就是三階的投票。”

傅崐萁的態度轉變，綠營勸可別最後是一套做一套，遇上被罷免才轉彎，卓榮泰拜會立院黨團，這回少了火藥味，但還得進到委員會才有最終答案。

With just 14 days to go, activists leading the recall campaign against KMT Lawmaker Liao Hsien-hsiang are doubling down against him. On Sunday, they criticized him for a statement he made in an appellation session, saying that residents in his constituency should be compensated as if the region were the final storage site for nuclear waste. Activists latched on his words, saying it’s beyond the pale that he would want to turn the region into a final disposal site, and as such proved himself an inadequate lawmaker that should be recalled.

Residents of Wanli, New Taipei are long plagued by nuclear waste from the Second Nuclear Power Plant. Although Wanli is only designated as an interim storage site, the lack of a final storage facility means nuclear waste is staying in the region indefinitely.

In fact, our country still has not found a final destination for nuclear waste. As many of our residents see it, all the dry storage casks indoor and outdoor may never be transported out of Wanli. As the representative for this region, Liao Hsien-hsiang blatantly proposed that Wanli become the final destination for nuclear waste. He also claimed that many Wanli locals support his proposal. But we’ve asked many people on the ground in Wanli, and no one, absolutely no one, agrees with him.

They’re taking things out of context for their political agenda. If the country can find a location to serve as the final repository, then please, get rid of the nuclear waste in Wanli the soonest possible. If not, then the country cannot consider Wanli to be an interim storage site and not compensate our residents in Wanli accordingly.

This isn’t the first time Liao was lambasted by opponents. Earlier this year, his proposed budget cut of NT$160 million for a social housing plan in Xizhi, also part of his constituency was also controversial.

Coaches of top martial artists to compete in Masters Games

The World Masters Games are to begin next month. Liu Wen-teng, who helped lead judoka Yang Yung-wei to a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, and Liu Tsung-ta, coach of taekwondo bronze medalist Lo Chia-ling, have both signed up to compete, swapping places with their students. Both coaches had to train hard and drop 10kg to get competition-ready.

Wearing a judogi, coach Liu Wen-teng trains with his Olympic silver-medal-winning student, Yang Yung-wei. To compete in this year’s World Masters Games, Liu had to lose 10kg in three months. Even when the team went abroad for training, he would take advantage of the opportunity to train with young competitors.

It’s because I signed up for the World Masters Games. When Yung-wei heard, he asked if he could be my coach. I said sure.

After 24 years away from competition, Liu is about to face off against athletes from around the world. His coach is Yang Yung-wei, who won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. He’s excited about the chance to trade places.

The most difficult part is probably the feeling of competing, since I haven’t used the electronic gear. It’s strange, because I’ve never been taught by a student before. When Chia-ling’s in the coaching area, she doesn’t know what to say. She just gets me some water.

Lo recently had surgery for a foot injury and is in recovery, but she often accompanies her coach at practices. She said she’s already imagining leading her athlete up to the mat.

Can you really implant your own tooth? One dentist in Taoyuan did, and he posted a video of the process online, generating much discussion. Looking in a mirror, he used tools to implant a tooth in the upper right corner of his mouth. He said that he needed an implant because he broke his original tooth by eating too many hard things.

It’s unexpected to see someone implanting a tooth in their own mouth, so this video generated a lot of discussion online. Some asked if it was a trick, while others joked that dentists don’t trust other dentists anymore. But the process was no joke—it was grueling.

Executing a DIY tooth implant is no simple procedure. Even the first step, giving yourself a shot of anesthetic, is a challenge for the hands and mind.

Just administering the anesthesia was tricky. I ended up having to use my left hand, because I’m right-handed, but I used my left hand to administer it. When you’re doing it on yourself, you immediately know when the area starts to go numb. It was the last tooth in the upper-right corner of my mouth, which is particularly challenging for implants and easy to mess up.

This is a challenging surgery, but with the help of positioning technology and a dental assistant, it was safe. As a doctor, it’s also important to educate the public.

It’s because I like to eat hard stuff, and that tooth had a filling from before, quite a big filling. Then one time when I was biting something hard, I heard it crack, so I had to get it removed. Woman enraged after man feeds dog chocolate

Did you know that feeding a dog chocolate could kill it? It’s because chocolate contains theobromine, which is a neurotoxin for dogs. Recently, a man in Kaohsiung fed chocolate candies to someone else’s dog in a park, claiming that he didn’t know dogs couldn’t have chocolate. The owner was of course enraged and called the police for attempted murder of her pet. Fortunately, the dog received treatment just in time.

After that, an activated carbon injection will have to be administered to neutralize the effect. Many foods we consume could be toxic to pets. When in doubt, just keep your hands off others’ dogs.
