As temperatures rise, many people are looking for ways to cool off. Mingde Reservoir in Miaoli may have the perfect solution: boating around Haitang Island. The island is in an enclosed area of the reservoir with calm waters that are perfect for boating. The county government has designated it as a water recreation zone, and businesses are starting to offer activities like kayaking, canoeing and standup paddleboarding.

Haitang Island, located within Mingde Reservoir, was used as a filming location for the Taiwanese film The Dull Ice Flower. Now designated as a water activity zone by the county government, the enclosed setting has attracted operators offering rentals of SUP boards and water bikes. The activities have proven popular with students.

SUP has become a highly popular water sport in recent years, and what better way to experience it than on a lake surrounded by forested hills. Before getting in the water, everyone must first attend a safety briefing and training session.

This place is really well-suited to boating. It’s a closed body of water, so there’s a nice breeze, but no waves. There are also no currents. It’s perfect for outdoor activities.

They change into water shoes, put on life jackets, and receive some basic instruction. The instruction is important, but to really get it, they have to step up on the board and give it a go! Others opt for the more laid-back experience of water biking.

As temperatures rise, water activities can be a fun way to beat the heat. Just remember to stay safe and wear protective equipment.

天氣炎熱，很多就是想玩水！苗栗縣明德水庫，有一處戲水祕境，「海棠島」，因為是封閉型水域，風平浪靜，縣府也規劃戲水區，近來業者申請進駐獨木舟、SUP站立划槳等水上活動，要讓玩水更安全。

位於苗栗明德水庫的海棠島，曾經是電影「魯冰花」拍攝地，是一處封閉水域，縣府規劃為戲水區，業者帶入SUP站立划槳與水上腳踏車，一開放就吸引學生報名參加。

Night market vendor in Tainan offers air-conditioned seating for NT$10

As the weather heats up, going to the night market can be a sweaty ordeal. But one oyster omelet stall in Tainan is helping customers beat the heat by offering a makeshift air-conditioned dining area. A customer recently shared a video of the stall, located at the Tainan Flower Night Market, which features a blue tent marked with the words "AC open to VIPs." For just an extra NT$10, customers can enjoy their food in cool comfort. The clever idea quickly went viral and sparked heated discussion online.

As the night market gets ready to open, vendors are busy prepping ingredients and cooking—but one oyster omelet stall is also busy setting up an air-conditioned space.

The owner of this stall has set up a blue canopy surrounded by clear plastic sheets to keep the cold air from escaping. A sign on top reads “AC open to VIPs,” promising a cool and refreshing way for customers to enjoy their oyster omelet.

The nice thing about it is, if customers feel too hot they can enjoy some air conditioning. He charges NT$10 per person.

I think it’s pretty innovative. It’s especially nice if you’re with your girlfriend. Paying NT$10 to make her happy? Totally worth it.

Visiting the stall in person, you’ll find a small air-conditioned zone with a portable water-cooled fan inside. The space fits about 2 to 3 tables and several stools.

If a customer wants to sit inside, we’ll let them know it’s NT$10 per person. We ask if they’re okay with it before taking the order. If not, they can sit outside. For little kids, we don’t charge, but for taller kids, we do—it depends on their height.

The AC unit cost me a little over NT$10,000, and the tent was another NT$4,000 to NT$5,000—so over NT$15,000 in total. We just started using it. The idea is to give customers a more comfortable dining experience.

Most night market stalls are open-air and rely on large floor fans to cool customers—but those usually don’t help much. As the weather heats up, this creative solution has caught the public’s attention. Whether the NT$10 surcharge can offset the electricity costs remains to be seen.

NTHU professor hires part-timers to take care of his cuttlefish

A life science professor at National Tsing Hua University recently posted a job ad seeking four part-timers to take care of his pharaoh cuttlefish, which were quickly filled. A four-to-five-hour shift involves feeding the cuttlefish, monitoring water quality and cleaning the fish tanks. However, not all animal lovers qualify, because the baby cuttlefish are easily startled. It’s also a risk that someone may not be able to resist stealing them and turning them into a dish.

These tiny pharoah cuttlefish looking on with round goggly eyes are only one-month old. They even know how to look at the camera.

This space isn’t an aquarium, but a cuttlefish room at National Tsing Hua University. A professor is researching their neural mechanisms.

My students and I rearranged this new cuttlefish room. To keep cuttlefish, you must take care of them round-the-clock; so sometimes even students might not have time to take care of the cuttlefish on weekends. That’s why we’re hiring part-timers.

The research lab’s job posting received numerous applications as soon as it opens, as if it’s the students’ dream job. But these tiny creatures are actually quite fussy. They must be fed regularly, and the water frequently replaced and the pH levels monitored. In addition, they’re easily startled and release ink when stressed.

Sometimes you might assume the water quality is fine because it seems so when you’re taking measurements, but the cuttlefish keep dying. So then you’d wonder why they died. Is it because the tank is not big enough, or is it the stuff we gave them? We must detect and fix errors in order to make sure they’re really healthy.

To make sure the cuttlefish can thrive, it’s not enough to only look at the measurable data. The students also have to be able to respond to them effectively.

A flock of ducks become online favorites when they visit a car dealership

At a used car dealership in Kaohsiung’s Daliao District, a group of curious visitors recently showed up. Poking their heads around the showroom, a flock of seven ducks amused the staff with their antics. However, just as one staff member approached them, the ducks quickly turned around and waddled off. The staff discovered the ducks actually lived across the street and had apparently crossed the road to do some car shopping. The manager said he’d recommend an SUV for a family that size.

Inside the dealership, the sales team is finalizing a deal with a customer when suddenly, a group of special guests shows up on the lot.

Seven ducks wander around the showroom, curiously peeking at the cars. But as soon as a staff member comes out to greet them, they line up and make a speedy exit.

That day we were all busy working, and our boss was talking with a customer when suddenly, we saw these seven ducks just walk in. We were wondering how they even got here. We were worried they might be in danger, since we often have dogs and cats on the lot—we’re a pet-friendly store. But when we saw them, we were really happy.

This scene happened at a used car dealership in Kaohsiung’s Daliao District. The adorable duck visitors made quite an impression. The manager joked that maybe they were shopping for a large family vehicle.

Yunlin university’s mango trees pose safety hazard every summer

Mango season is in full swing, but it’s not all sweet. At National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, the mango trees along Longtan Road can actually be hazardous when their fruits fall to the ground. One student posted a photo of how a mango left his scooter’s headset with a gaping hole. The university wants to make sure that students are aware of the hazard and urges them to exercise caution when passing by.

It’s a leisurely drive along Longtan Road at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, with trees on both sides providing shade. Until this.

A mango falls right on the car. Students say it’s nothing new—everyone there will eventually get hit by a mango. One graduate student posted a photo of his scooter after it got hit by a mango and left a gaping hole on the headset.

I heard a loud bang coming from the headset. I thought something exploded in my scooter or something. But it turned out a mango had left a hole, and was even lodged inside. I reported the incident to the police with the mango and shattered pieces as evidence.

Someone joked that he’s probably eligible for state compensation. But it actually could be the students themselves that are to blame.

Every year there’ll be students or nearby residents coming to try and pick the mangos. They’d use a wooden pole and hit the branches for mangoes to fall. We’d also make sure to clean up the road surface.

It’s not all bad though. The fallen mangoes are free for all to enjoy. Just exercise caution when you pass by, because the force of a mango falling is quite strong.

In other words, there’s a force of 50kg per cm-square. That’s a very, very strong force, more than strong enough to shatter glass.

The six-decade old mango trees still bear fruit every year. The university also says they always make sure to inform newly-enrolled students to be cautious of the mangoes during harvest season. The university also says they’ll remove the fallen mangoes more regularly to prevent accidents.

Summer jazz festival brings ‘cool jazz’ to Taiwan

The annual National Theater and Concert Hall Summer Jazz Festival will kick off in August. "Sounds Cool!" is this year’s theme, which is inspired by cool jazz and the spirit of legendary American trumpeter Miles Davis. FTV reporter Stephany Yang has the highlights!

Vocalist Lo Yen-ting take the stage joined by Rich Huang, Stacey Wei, Toru Hayakawa and Tseng Yi-tseng. Lo will perform a series of original works inspired by landforms.

In my concert, I will do something very personal. It will be very contemporary sounds, combining with world music and folk music. It might not be the traditional jazz that you might expect, but I hope everyone can come and keep an open mind and experience how I describe how I see in these outdoor scenes with my music.

The annual National Theater and Concert Hall Summer Jazz Festival’s is back under the theme, "Sounds Cool!" It was inspired by Cool Jazz and the spirit of legendary trumpeter Miles Davis. One of the musicians will be Grammy-nominated Fred Hersch, whose piano trio pays tribute to Miles Davis.

In the 50s, jazz had different styles like cool jazz and hard bop and bebop and even Latin jazz. This time the NTCH Jazz project this summer, we will bring cool jazz style to the audience. The band has a 12-piece band, so it is a pretty large band. We have trumpet, we have trombone, and saxophone. This year, we picked up the theme of cool jazz so if you think about cool jazz, the first musician you will think of is of course Miles Davis.

Other highlights include a concert by Cécile McLorin Salvant, a three-time Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist. The festival will feature performances by Grammy Award-winning jazz stars from Taiwan and abroad.

Most of the jazz musicians we invited have won multiple Grammy Awards or received Grammy nominations. We have Fred Hersch performing jazz piano, and a female vocalist, Cécile. We aim to bring the world’s finest jazz musicians to Taiwan to perform. At the same time, we strive to systematically introduce jazz-related elements — whether it’s historical background or musical styles — to Taiwanese audiences through this jazz festival. This year, we focus on cool jazz.

In addition, there will be outdoor jazz parties and educational workshops. The annual National Theater and Concert Hall Summer Jazz Festival will take place from Aug. 9 to Aug. 30.

Unlicensed ambulance driver kills scooter rider after running red light

Instead of saving a life, an ambulance driver driving without a license ended up taking a life in Taipei Tuesday afternoon. The ambulance was rushing to the hospital when it ran a red light and crashed into a scooter, killing the scooter rider on the spot. A further investigation revealed that the ambulance driver was actually the owner of a private ambulance service company, which he founded last year.

The ambulance’s windshield is fully smashed, and the scooter is due for the scrap yard. You can imagine the force of the impact. But perhaps you wouldn’t imagine that the ambulance driver was on the road without a license.

The crash happened at 2 in the afternoon on Tuesday. The driver of the ambulance was 23-year-old Mr. Lu. He had been transferring a patient with cerebral bleeding from the Tri-Service General Hospital in Songshan to the branch in Neihu. At an intersection on Sanmin Road, he crashed against 60-year-old Mr. Huang, who was driving straight on on a green light. He was sent to hospital without vital signs. Resuscitation efforts failed.

Ambulance drivers have to have a professional driver’s license. Violators can be fined up to NT$500,000 in accordance with Article 41 of the Emergency Medical Services Act. In severe cases, the business permit of the ambulance company may be revoked.

Mr. Lu, the ambulance driver in the crash, is the owner of the ambulance company. Though he has EMT certification, he does not have a license to drive ambulances. That means he’s been driving without a license since founding the company last year.

What happened was, there was an emergency, and the drivers that were online weren’t available to take the assignment. He just wanted to save a life, and take the nurse over first.

The company’s CEO said his brother got behind the wheel in an attempt to save a life, but in the end, his actions ended up taking a life.
