Taiwanese battery makers to build a stronger local supply chain

The government has been urging efforts to improve self-sufficiency and to develop a non-red supply chain for critical technologies. Now, as part of these efforts, three local battery makers are joining hands. Amita Technologies, which has been awarded for its development of safer lithium-ion batteries, has signed an agreement with Digi-Triumph Technology and Smart Power System Co. The companies say their goal is to turn Taiwan into an energy exporter. Let’s take a look.

Inside a dry room, automated machines carry out processes like stacking, welding, heat sealing, and liquid injection of battery electrodes — producing the heart of a drone: the battery cell.

These high-quality, high-performance battery cells come from a Taiwanese battery manufacturer that has been producing batteries locally for 25 years. Their batteries have been used in drones, electric scooters and electric boats, among other devices. The entire supply chain for the batteries they produce is located in Taiwan — and now, they’re forming a national battery team.

On the behind-the-meter side of things, the government has increased its demand for products made in Taiwan. We already have a complete, deliverable solution that will strengthen our collaborative efforts.

The government has introduced a policy of promoting “technology-based” and localized energy storage. To meet the demands of that policy, battery maker Amita Technologies has partnered with Digi-Triumph Technology and Smart Power System Co. Through collaboration the companies seek to integrate technology and resources to produce a non-red supply chain — and to help Taiwan shift from an energy-importing country to an energy-exporting one.

NTD rises sharply and closes at NT$28.828 against USD

Wealth Magazine’s annual forum for industry VIPs was held Thursday in Taipei. The focus of the forum was none other than tariffs and the NTD’s sharp rise. On the very day of the event, the NTD appreciated by another NT$0.119 against the US dollar to close at NT$28.828. It’s the first time in three years for the NTD to trade lower than NT$29 per USD. The magazine’s director says Taiwan should brace for large losses in foreign exchange markets.

Some people say that Trump wants the NTD to appreciate in accordance with the Big Mac Index. There are also people telling me that the NTD may rise to NT$13.3 against the USD.

The NTD’s sharp rise since May took the spotlight at Wealth Magazine’s annual forum. On July 3, it rose by another NT$0.19 and closed at NT$28.828 against the greenback. It’s the first time in three years for it to trade lower than NT$29 per USD.

The NTD’s appreciation will incur great forex losses. The Central Bank also made it clear that if it’s going to be hands-off, they will completely take their hands off; and if they’re interfering, then they’ll also make it sure they’re interfering. I think when neither seem probable, everyone should be quite worried about forex losses, which will look quite bad in the books.

It’s not only dealing a blow to traditional exporters, even chipmakers and other technology and machinery companies are taking a hit. With projected gross margins slipping downward, it’s now alleged that TSMC is hiring traders to buy corporate bonds and financial debentures to de-risk.

You may have to spend more to hedge against risks, to hire more professional traders to oversee the company’s financial plan. TSMC is already doing that. I believe many more companies will follow.

Amid the NTD’s sharp rise, TSMC’s projected margins and earnings per share for this year and the next have gone down. If Taiwan’s top chipmaker is preparing for the worst already, other small and medium enterprises cannot sit idle either.

Mind Set Art Center celebrates 15th anniversary with exhibition

To celebrate its 15th anniversary, the Mind Set Art Center is holding an exhibition. The "Tree of Life" exhibition showcases works of artists who have collaborated with the gallery over the years, symbolizing its growth and resilience. FTV reporter Stephany Yang illustrates this story.

This work is by Marina Cruz, a Filipino contemporary artist. Her work “Reflecting on Plants Clinging on Walls” combines abstract color swatches and collage techniques. The artist transforms a corner of her house long affected by flooding into a beautiful tropical space.

Marina Cruz is one of the longest relationships with us. We started working with her 13 years ago. This is the latest painting of hers, depicting her family house which was built by her grandfather. All of the art was surrounded by the family objects. For this special painting, it actually records all the flooded threads. You can see the watermarks, which symbolize the family members in and out. Marina uses a very feminine perspective to record this painting and also respond to the family memories.

Yang Yu-ning is a Taiwanese contemporary artist known for her explorations of psychological landscapes and abstract forms. In this work, the artist depicts two banana trees as a couple of travelers. She utilizes different grey tones to open a dialogue between ink painting, photography, and traditional brushwork in a piece that evokes companionship.

This artist is from Taiwan. Her name is Yang Yu-ning. She was born in 1990 so she is a pretty young artist and is quite promising because we think she is quite unique in terms of ink painting. Especially when we talk about contemporary ink. She was a dancer, so for this ink, you can see the rhythms in it. What is a special thing about it is that when she does the ink painting, she will prepare the ink bottles first. It is like a computer printing concept. She would do the draft and she would mark the numbers of the shades of ink, and after she decided, she would start to relax herself and start to paint. That is why you can see the painting behind me is a banana tree, but they act like a human being. They incline to each other so the title of the work is "The Cluster of Travelers. " They are basically like human beings.

To celebrate its 15th anniversary, Mind Set Art Center is holding an exhibition titled "A Tree of Life." The exhibition features the works of fifteen artists from Taiwan, Asia, and Europe, highlighting key moments in their collaboration with the gallery. The works span diverse media—including painting, sculpture, photography, installation and mixed media— as it explores the themes of "plants" and "time." The exhibition not only reflects on the gallery’s growth but also envisions the next fifteen years of the gallery.

This special exhibition, "Tree of Life," it came from a really sweet story. As the gallery was founded, our collector friend Dr. Chen planted a tea olive tree in his garden. It was really sprout at that time. People told him that it won’t grow beyond a human being’s height. But right now, after 15 years, it is already 2.5 meters tall. Right now, we wanted to celebrate it with our artists, so we chose 15 artists to title the show "Tree of Life" to reflect our past, and also want to walk a new journey with our artists.

The exhibition will be held at the Mind Set Art Center until Aug. 8.

Recall petition campaigners drive LED truck around Taiwan

There is less than a month to go before a recall election to be held on July 26. Ahead of the election, a group of recall-petition campaigners is traveling the country on a 16-day “pilgrimage” – a last-minute effort to drum up more support. Starting on July 4, the group will head out in a procession led by a mobile LED screen truck, making their first stop in Hualien. The truck’s screen will play an incriminating compilation of KMT and TPP lawmakers’ activities over the past year.

Formosan black bears adorn the truck, holding bubble tea in one paw and a protest sign in the other. There’s flags saying "resist the CCP" and "protect Taiwan." This is a convoy that will travel the country to promote the recall elections.

The inspiration came from the 2012 DPP campaign vehicle, when Tsai Ing-wen was first running for office, and from last year’s tour promoting the domestically built Hai Kun submarine, initiated by President Lai Ching-te. We’ll begin with an oath-taking rally in Hualien on July 4. Since we were called to action by KMT caucus whip Fu Kun-chi, we’re starting there.

The videos played on the truck’s LED, an incriminating compilation of some of the actions taken by the KMT and TPP in the legislature over the past year. The vehicle will accompany the convoy to show the clips to the public.

The LED vehicle will play these video clips in each city we visit to help people remember just how rotten these pan-blue lawmakers normally are. If it weren’t for the recall campaign, they wouldn’t suddenly be keeping a low profile. I’ll also represent many friends with disabilities, so I’ll be joining with my three-wheeler and will ride along as the convoy travels to different counties.

Though Yu Hsiao-ching has mobility difficulties, she said she is determined to join the convoy to “help improve Taiwan.” Other recall campaign groups will also be joining the convoy.

We won’t miss out on promoting the first recall election. The “protect the nation pilgrimage” is a crucial moment for us in Hsinchu as well. We want everyone in Taiwan, including those in Hsinchu County, to know: this recall is not about fueling hatred — it’s about protecting the nation and defending Taiwan.

The recall team for New Taipei’s 11th district — Xindian, Shenkeng, Shiding, Pinglin, and Wulai — will be there, and our team will send representatives to join the nationwide convoy.

VP Hsiao mentions tariffs in speech at US Independence Day event

Taiwan officials on Wednesday took part in ceremony hosted by the American Institute Taiwan to celebrate 249 years of US independence. In their speeches, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and AIT Director Raymond Greene underscored the close ties between the two countries. But Greene also made a point to urge Taiwan to increase spending in national defense, and Hsiao called for a good resolution to talks on Trump’s tariffs.

US “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” offers incentives to chip companies

The US Senate on July 1 passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, or OBBBA. One of the clauses in OBBBA creates incentives for chipmaking companies to invest in the US, by allowing up 35% deductions in investment taxes as long as a new fab breaks ground before 2026. Many US and international companies stand to benefit, but probably not TSMC. The second fab is already in the works and therefore probably could not benefit retroactively. And the third fab is only scheduled to break ground in 2027 at the earliest.

The US Senate on July 1 passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, or OBBBA. Once it takes effect, chip companies breaking ground on a new fab before 2026 could enjoy 35% deductions in investment taxes. This figure is not only higher than the 30% rate in the draft bill, but also considerably higher than the current 25%.

For Trump’s second term, he gave himself the goal of having at least 25% of the world’s advanced chipmaking output coming from the US. So of course he’d push for domestication of chipmaking in OBBBA.

The bill will greatly benefit chip companies with plans to expand in the US. Some US beneficiaries include Micron Technologies, which recently announced a US$200 billion expansion plan; GlobalFoundries and Intel, as well as South Korea’s Samsung. As for Taiwanese companies, Globalwafers had already announced an additional US$4 billion investment to build a 12-inch wafer manufacturing site in Texas. As soon as OBBBA passed, the company said it will apply for tax cuts. Another Taiwanese company, ASE could also benefit. As for TSMC, it’s not known whether OBBBA could apply retroactively on their second US fab currently under construction; whereas the third US fab is only scheduled to break ground in 2027.

The second fab is currently under construction, so it’s a great question whether it’s eligible for the newly introduced tax breaks. As for the third fab, it may only break ground in 2027 at the earliest, so TSMC may not benefit from OBBBA.

OBBBA’s clauses on incentives for chip companies aims to take back chip manufacturing from Asia to the US and, as US President Donald Trump would say, “make America great again.”
