Influencer offers bizarre travel hack of getting sued to visit Taiwan for 15 days

2025-07-31

An influencer based in China says he’s found a new way for Chinese people to tour Taiwan, by getting involved in a lawsuit. Michael 886 says all they have to do is to sue, or get sued by a Taiwanese person to be able to hop over for a 15-day round-the-island visit. Officials in Taiwan are having none of it, saying that getting summoned to a courtroom in Taiwan is not so easy.

Michael 886
China-based influencer
If a Taiwanese person sues you, or you sue a Taiwanese person, if there’s a lawsuit, you can use it to go to Taiwan Province for 15 days.

What a travel tip! China-based Taiwanese influencer Michael 886 lets his followers know of a way to visit Taiwan: by getting involved in a lawsuit.

Michael 886
China-based influencer
You can see all of Taiwan in 15 days. It takes just five hours to go from north to south. I hope more people can support the idea that the two sides of the strait are part of one family, so that we can have more exchanges with our compatriots.

Cross-strait exchanges are sparse at the moment, amid strained bilateral relations. But the influencer says getting permission to visit is as easy as getting sued. Surely something’s amiss!

Member of public
It’s really bizarre and senseless. It’s just an attention grab. More views equals more ad revenue.

Member of public
I’ve never heard anything of the sort. If I sue you, would you then go for a trip around the US? It’s nonsense.

Internet users have pointed out that last August, Michael 886 was in a video together with Chiang Kai-shek’s great-grandson Andrew Chiang in China. He even wore a T-shirt saying “falling leaves return to their roots,” a clear indication of his stance on cross-strait affairs. The National Immigration Agency says they have never heard of and would never grant Taiwan entry to Chinese nationals starting frivolous lawsuits for tourism.

Voice of Chu Wen-yu
National Immigration Agency
The National Immigration Agency strongly rejects using lawsuits as a means to travel around Taiwan. Entry is only granted with a subpoena or court hearing notice issued by a judicial authority.

Hsu Chih-chieh
Lawmaker (DPP)
This influencer is going too far, teaching these foul tactics. Frivolous lawsuits like that would be a waste of judicial resources and would open up a loophole that the Chinese could exploit. I urge the National Immigration Agency and the Mainland Affairs Council to deal with the matter seriously, so that Chinese people can’t abuse the law and visit Taiwan on frivolous lawsuits.

With so many videos promoting cross-strait unification, the DPP lawmaker urges internet users to be vigilant for misinformation and recognize the posts for the propaganda they are.
