
Now is the best time of year to enjoy locally raised crabs. The Miaoli County Government is inviting people to visit Miaoli over the long weekend to enjoy its local Chinese mitten crabs, known as an autumn delicacy. Farmers in the area are raising 350,000 of the crabs this year.
Crabs cooked in various styles are on display at this press conference hosted by the Miaoli County Government. The county is promoting its locally raised Chinese mitten crabs.
The mitten crabs raised across Miaoli weigh around 115 to 150 grams each and cost from NT$350 to NT$400, about the same as previous years. The crabs turn bright red after being cooked, with sweet and savory meat inside. In its efforts to ensure the crabs are both delicious and healthy, the county government puts a small ring with a QR code on every crab that passes inspection to show the crab’s origin and authenticity.

The crab should be well done, but not overcooked for the best result. Not only does the meat have a great texture, but the roe is top quality. It’s the best.
Due to the hot weather, farmers followed experts’ advice to deepen the water level in their ponds. Over the years, aquaculture techniques have continued to improve.

Our weather here is too hot, which makes the water temperature too high. The water level could be a bit deeper, about one to 1.5 meters deeper. Of course, you also need to cultivate aquatic plants or water bamboo properly.
This year Miaoli is raising a total of 350,000 crabs, worth about NT$100 million all together. The county government plans to convert more farmland into aquaculture ponds, creating a Miaoli mitten crab street. Hopefully Miaoli’s crab industry will continue to grow, and its crabs will get even more delicious.

秋蟹來了!最近正是品嘗大閘蟹的最佳時候。苗栗縣養殖戶今年放養35萬隻蟹苗,縣府邀請大家連假到苗栗旅遊,不要錯過大啖當地養殖大閘蟹的秋日美味。
麻油香蟹、再來盤清蒸大閘蟹,苗栗縣府端出再地養殖優質大閘蟹,宣布2025年大閘蟹,上菜了。
苗栗縣府輔導養殖,各家養殖場的大閘蟹重量約在3至4兩之間,價格約350到400左右,與往年持平。一隻隻紅通通的蟹殼排排放,引人食指大動,不只美味也要養出健康,縣府為每隻合格檢查的大閘蟹設置「產地QR Code以及雷射防偽蟹環」,養出好品質。

“一定要9分熟的蟹,才會是最剛好最恰當,不但肉質口感好,而且蟹膏蟹黃都是一級品,最好的東西。”
因應炎熱氣候,蟹農也聽取專家建議,加深養殖場水域深度。歷年養殖技術不斷精進。

“在我們這邊天氣太熱,因為這樣水溫太熱,是不是水深挖深一點,大概1至1.5公尺左右比較深,那當然你的水草,或筊白筍要也把它養殖好。”
苗栗縣內2025年,總共放養35萬隻蟹苗,產值約1億多元,未來在法規許可下,苗栗縣府持續推廣,利用休耕農田改為養殖場,打造苗栗大閘蟹一條街,期望來年產值衝高翻倍、美味加倍。
