Outrage after EVA Air asks dead flight attendant to justify leave

The EVA Air case becomes more shocking by the day. This time, more outrage has erupted over a text message exchange between the airline’s admin and the recently deceased flight attendant, on the day of her funeral. She was asked to submit proof for the family care leave she had taken on Sept. 27, when she was in the hospital. The flight attendants union explained that their colleague had not taken a sick leave when she should’ve to avoid retaliation, if she were able to return to work.
On the day of her funeral, a text message was sent to the recently passed EVA Air flight attendant by her company requesting proof for family care leave she had taken on Sept. 27. The insensitive text immediately angered the flight attendant’s family, who sent a pdf document of her death certificate to the company admin.

Even if this person wasn’t a flight attendant, wasn’t one of our colleagues. Even if it were just an average Jane Doe, I don’t believe anyone with the most basic sense of humanity can accept the family members of the recently deceased being treated this way. It added multiple insults to the injury. So many of us were angered to the point of tears. We also think it’s humiliating and a slap in the face to flight attendants in general.
What’s more, the flight attendant should’ve taken a sick leave, theoretically. So why did she take a family care leave?

Under the Gender Equality in Employment Act, workers are protected from unfair treatment should they take family care leave or menstrual leave. She’s someone who needed taking care of, but she had to lie to the company and say that she’s taking a day off to take care of family members.
EVA Air has since issued an apology stating that the admin personnel was unfamiliar with the company’s procedures and that they will solemnly reflect on the mistake. However, the company has yet to address controversies on its leave policy for cabin crew.

Looking back at this period of time, it’s clear that they’re only doing the bare minimum and paying lip service. They kept saying that they’ll reflect and deal with this seriously. But you’ll see that they kept humiliating her family members. Even with thousands of flight attendants coming out to identify problems with their policies and revealing how they’ve been treated unfairly, the company still hasn’t said a word in response and there’s no way to reach the management.
The union also emphasized that the flight attendant had taken leave over three national holiday periods, meaning that her performance over this period would come last place among all 5,000+ flight attendants in the company. Had she lived, her poor attendance record would deprive her of choosing and moving work shifts. Worse, she could even be penalized with a hellish work schedule.

長榮航空空服猝死案，持續延燒，最新截圖流出，死者上午告別式，下午手機就收到公司傳訊詢問，要求繳交先前的請假證明。讓工會痛批長榮高層泯滅人性。更透露，死者這天請假，是在住院，為了應付公司，只好改請家庭照顧假。
長榮猝死空服員告別式當天，公司竟然派員透過內部系統，傳訊死者，詢問9/27家庭照顧假的證明。家屬看到訊息，火冒三丈，直言長榮內部，真的要檢討，附上死亡證明，狠酸，你們可以慢慢處理。

“就算這個人不是空服員，不是我們的姐妹，他就算只是一個一般的路人，我相信只要是一個正常有人性的人，都不可能接受說，用這種方式去對待死者跟他的家屬，這對家屬不知道是幾度傷害啦，非常多人都氣哭了，然後我們覺得，這在踐踏跟羞辱空服員”

“家庭照顧假或生理假，是在性別平等工作法裡面有規範，不能有不利待遇，一個應該被照顧的人，然後，還要去騙公司說，我是因為要照顧別人，所以我才要請假”
長榮發聲明致歉，強調是同仁對業務不熟悉，會深切檢討改進。只是事發至今近一周，針對空服員的請假爭議，卻遲遲沒有正面回應。

“過了很多天回想起來，就是他們一直在敷衍了事，然後整天嘴巴上說，我們會檢討，我們會好好處理，但你不管是看到，他一而再再而三的羞辱家屬，或是說有幾千個空服員，在跟他們說這個制度有問題，哪裡哪裡被你們傷害，然後他一個字都不回，然後主管完全找不到”
工會指出，死者住院期間，剛好橫跨三個國定連假。加重扣分之下，考績將會在5千空服員中墊底。死者若真的活下來，後續也將無法選班、調班，甚至被排懲罰性班表。
