Rooftop pickleball pop-up court opens

Pickleball has gained popularity over the years, known for its mix of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Today, we take you to a newly established pickleball club in Zhonghe. To introduce the sport to more people, the club’s founder, Nicole Huang, has also built a rooftop pop-up pickleball court that’s open to both beginners and experienced players. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to the club’s founder to find out more.

Pickleball is a fast-growing paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It’s played on a smaller court with a lower net and a perforated plastic ball. Easy to learn and fun for all ages, the sport has attracted people from all walks of life. Former UBS Taiwan head Dennis Chen plays several times a week at this pickleball club, leading groups of a dozen or more in weekly warm ups and coordinating games.

I started playing pickleball after I retired. I love pickleball because the paddle is light, it is easy, the ball is light so that is the reason why I started playing pickleball. I play a couple of times a week. I like playing pickleball because we get to socialize and we get to talk all the time.

Pickleball is something that is very social but at the same time has impact. At the same time, it is not as impactful as tennis, so I think it is really good for all ages.

This pickleball club was founded by Nicole Huang, a seasoned brand strategist with a background in global marketing. After spending over 10 years in the spirits industry across Asia and Europe, Nicole returned to Taiwan to build a pickleball club in February. Her inspiration came from the rise of pickleball in the U.S. and Southeast Asia, especially in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Recognizing that Taiwan was only beginning to discover the sport. Nicole decided to build a pickleball club focused on community and connection.

I started this sport in Thailand, in Bangkok while I was working there. Instantly, the first time I played, I got hooked. I got addicted. I think that is why I brought pickleball to Taiwan and to create such a style like a private-club style into Taiwan. We would like to bring the sport of pickleball one step further. It’s not just a sport. For us, it’s a community and a sense of belonging that we want to create for people. You can see from our design of the space, it is very comfortable and cozy. You’ll hear a lot of laughter and conversations from the players. Also from our program, from open play, from the private court bookings, and everything. Even the food and beverages we provide it at our club. I think people come here. They share with us, it’s like their backyard court. They come her and find their pickleball friends here. Old and new. They meet old people and they meet new friends here.

Together with her team, Nicole built the club into more than just a sports venue — it’s a social community where people of all ages and backgrounds come to play, connect, and unwind in a welcoming, fun environment. Building the club was no easy feat. Nicole says the hardest part was finding a legal and suitable venue for a pickleball court — a process that took approximately nine months.

I quit my job basically, and that was when I moved from Thailand back to Taiwan. I spent around nine months to one year to find a perfect venue. And then, after that, I designed the brand, from the logo to our space. It’s been a long journey, but I do enjoyed it, even if it is risky and challenging but I enjoy the journey. Construction, the building use, and even the fire safety requirements needs to be all legally compliant. That is really difficult.

I am currently at the Pickle Day Social Club’s A11 pop-up court.

Their newest project includes a pickleball pop-up court at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi A11’s 4th floor, open until February 28. There are two courts available, and players can make reservations online.

This is our most exciting project of the year I would say. We started this pop-up from October, and then it will end next year, end of February 2026. It is a five-month pop-up so it is not really a flash mob. Our hope is to introduce this sport to more people with the help of our partners, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi because they are in the prime area and more people will see it. It is a great exposure.

Nicole hopes to introduce more people to pickleball and create a space where sport, community, and lifestyle converge — a place where people can stay active, meet new friends, and be part of a community.

這家匹克球俱樂部的創始人是品牌策略師黃悅君，她擁有全球行銷背景。在亞洲和歐洲的烈酒行業工作了十多年後，黃悅君於二月回到台灣，創辦了這家匹克球俱樂部。匹克球在美國和東南亞，尤其是泰國、馬來西亞和越南等國家興起，黃悅君意識到，這項運動在台灣還沒受到太多關注，因此創立了一家以社群為核心的匹克球俱樂部。

黃悅君和她的團隊將俱樂部打造成了不僅僅是一個運動場所，更是一個社交場合，不同年齡、不同背景的人們可以在這裡打球、交流，並在溫馨有趣的環境中放鬆身心。黃悅君說，開設這個俱樂部最困難的是找到一個合法且合適的匹克球場地點，這耗時約九個月。

"我基本上辭掉了工作，然後從泰國搬回了台灣。我花了大約九個月到一年的時間才找到一個完美的場地。之後，我設計了品牌，從標誌到空間。這是一個漫長的過程，但我很享受，即使充滿風險和挑戰，我也享受這個過程。建築施工、建築用途，甚至消防安全要求都必須符合法律規定，這真的很難。"

Emergency response coordinator emotional after 23 days on the job

After the Mataian River barrier lake overflowed, flooding Hualien’s Guangfu Township, the Central Emergency Operations Center immediately formed a task force to handle the aftermath. The key point person, chief coordinator Chi Lien-cheng, can now successfully retire from the role after 23 days of nonstop work. From dawn to dusk, Chi helped a shattered town find a ray of light through the dark. In an exclusive and emotional interview with FTV, Chi shared his experience.

With his firm gaze and imposing air, Chi Lien-cheng on Sept. 30 arrived in Hualien’s Guangfu Township to lead relief efforts. He hasn’t rested for the 23 days since then.

As soon as I arrived, the first thought I had was: How are we going to do this? Because everywhere you looked was utter devastation.

By coordinating teams and organizing resources, Chi was able to turn this disaster zone around.

I started eating dinner at 8pm. Sometimes when I couldn’t eat anything, I just had instant noodles. At night, I’d start thinking about what we needed to do the next day, so I couldn’t sleep well.

He’d wake up at 5am and start holding meetings at 8. At 10, he’d convene a news conference, then go to inspect the town. In the afternoon, he’d listen to reports from officials on the ground, then in the evening met with county officials. His last task was to give orders to military troops. By the time he returned to his room, it was already 11pm. But even the toughest of men can have a tender heart.

The most heartbreaking thing was that, since all the single-story dwellings were swept away, at first, the number of missing was over 100. There was enormous pressure at that time. Extremely tense. I went to offer condolences to all the bereaved households on the premier’s behalf. Each time, I went to the funeral hall to light incense and pray.

When discussing people who lost family or homes in the disaster, Chi’s eyes turned red. He’s helped in many disaster zones before, but this is the one that will stay with him.

I want to especially thank all the volunteers. In my experience with disaster relief, I’ve never seen something like this before. This is the first.

In his own self-assessment, Chi said he put in 80%, but there’s still 20% room for improvement. There’s still a lot he wants to do, and after returning to his work at the Executive Yuan, he said he’ll keep working on behalf of the people.

Art collective celebrates 15 years with an exhibit at MOCA Taipei

Today we take you to an exhibit by a Taiwanese contemporary art collective called LuxuryLogico. The team created 14 works utilizing multi-media formats like light, sound, and kinetic installations. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to the artists to find out more!

201 Space is a multidimensional installation by LuxuryLogico, composed of three interwoven core works: Lightpulse, Echoforest, and Mindhand. Together, they form a living, breathing cosmic landscape. Echoforest is built out of driftwood, forming a symbiotic forest. Mindhand evokes associations with life through the form of a “giant mechanical hand.” It interacts with the multi-layered light fields of Lightpulse, symbolizing the flow of human consciousness.

This space, we’ve used three pieces to create the "201 Space." The first piece is a gesture - the hand we see behind us now. The second is the driftwood scattered throughout the environment, which we call "Echoforest." The third is light - specifically, sound and light. What I find most challenging is how to integrate natural lighting and mechanical elements to shape the space we call 201 Space. One of the toughest technical challenges was using 24 motors to control the flexibility of a single hand. What we’re really trying to explore is how to convey meaning through machinery - not just for the sake of technology itself. A hand can also transmit messages. So through the interaction between the hand and the space, we aim to express the connection between nature, humanity, the universe, and Earth.

Through painting and projection mapping, this multi-media work depicts the three past working spaces of the team. It tells the story of LuxuryLogico’s 15-year journey of artistic creation.

This special exhibition marks our 15th anniversary. Each piece responds to the long-standing rhythms of our creative life and reflects our observations and imagination of Taiwan. This particular work is called “15-Year Studio.” The three visuals represent the three studios we’ve moved through over the past 15 years. some are hidden sanctuaries, while others are very public. We used mapping technology and 3D imagery to calculate the light and shadow changes throughout a full day, then projected that cycle back into our flat studio space. This symbolizes the continuous passage of time, where we keep creating new things.

Cosmic Sketches is a solo exhibition by the Taiwanese contemporary art collective LuxuryLogico, marking their 15th anniversary. Anchored in the theme “It’s all connected,” the exhibition delves into the intricate interplay between nature, technology, and humanity. Founded in 2010, LuxuryLogico is celebrated for its groundbreaking integration of technology, music, video, and installation art. Their work has been featured in major cultural events including the Taipei Universiade and the Taichung Flora Expo. This exhibition presents 14 iconic works alongside one newly commissioned piece, spanning diverse media such as installation, painting, sculpture, and video. Through these works, viewers are invited to witness the symbiotic relationship between humans and the natural world, trace the passage of time through material and form, and-through the lens of new creation-reflect on the future and the profound interconnectedness of all things.

Over a decade ago, technology wasn’t as advanced, so we had to rely on many computers and software programs to control everything. But now, with projectors and simple coding, we can achieve the same results much more easily. So this time, the process felt much freer and effortless.

For us, this is a important exhibition. It marks a 15-year journey of connection, centered around a theme we call “Cosmic Sketching.” A key topic running through it is the idea that all things are interconnected. This exhibition features many objects from everyday life, as well as relationships between people and their environments. We use the word “universe” and break it down into time and space. In the context of sketching, it becomes a way of documenting both. Therefore, when people visit this exhibition, we hope they’ll engage with the objects in their own way - through sketching, technology, or humanistic interpretation - and develop new ways of thinking about these objects.

"Cosmic Sketches" will be held at MoCA Taipei till Jan.11 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei.

Blinks still enjoying the high from BLACKPINK concerts

Kaohsiung is still recovering from BLACKPINK fever, even though it’s been days since the K-pop idols wrapped up their Taiwan stay. The girl group thanked fans for the warm welcome with a recap video on social media, showing local landmarks and clips from their shows. And with the concerts long ended, fans wanting a closer connection with their idols are flocking to a Hong Kong French toast shop that Lisa tried during her stay.

The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, the Dagang Bridge, the Kaohsiung Music Center. These landmarks all feature in a recap video BLACKPINK posted after their concerts in Taiwan.

The highlight reel shows clips from the concerts, including of course their sexy dancing onstage and their cute shenanigans. The 1-minute video has been a hit with local Blinks.

And it seems Kaohisung left an impression. On Thursday, Lisa posted a story of a snack she loved during her visit: Hong-Kong style French toast. Her fans were quick to track down the exact shop.

Bread is cut into cubes and deep-fried golden and crispy, then drizzled with condensed milk. The sweet treat is from a shop in Cianjhen District which has now gone viral overnight, packed with Blinks wanting to eat the same food as their idol.

Someone messaged us saying “Are you the shop Lisa mentioned?” We checked her Instagram stories and it was us! We were shocked!

The shop owners were originally planning to take the day off, but headed right to work amid the flood of Blinks. Some were in line even before the shop opened.

Online registration for NT$10,000 cash handouts to start Nov. 5

More details have been announced regarding the government’s NT$10,000 cash handouts. Foreign residents will be eligible to collect the cash, as long as they have an APRC or if they have an ARC and are married to a Taiwan national. The Online registration opens on Nov. 5 on the website official website. The first cash handouts will be wired on Nov. 12.

It’s early morning on a bank holiday and this woman is a the police station registering for the NT$10,000 cash handouts, which will be given out starting Nov. 12.

In rural areas such as Shizi in Pingtung, Wanrong in Hualien and Jinfeng in Taitung, lists of recipients are getting compiled before Oct. 28. The cash will be disbursed through five channels, just like the NT$6,000 handouts in 2023.

Many young people are registering online. But be wary of scams. The correct website is http://10000.gov.tw. Registration will open on Nov. 5 for five days based on the last digit of the applicant’s ID or ARC number. The deadline to get the cash is April 30 next year.

Besides registering online, you can also collect the cash at the bank or from ATMs at post offices. But for that, you’ll have to wait until Nov. 17. You can also collect the cash straight from the counter at the post office starting Nov. 24.

There is no need to register if you’re covered by government pension or social welfare allowance programs. The cash will be remitted automatically on Nov. 12. Eligibility for the cash handouts extends to foreigners with APRCs, foreign spouses with ARCs married to Taiwan nationals and even newborns born all the way until April 30, 2026.
