A village chief in Hualien has won an appeal against her removal from office due to her holding Chinese nationality. Teng Wan-hua was born in China and married a Taiwanese national. She was later the chief of Xuetian Village, but was dismissed earlier this year. Though she won the appeal, the Ministry of the Interior insists she cannot be in office in accordance to the Nationality Act.
There are another four village chiefs in a similar situation around Taiwan. The KMT says it’s working on an amendment to the Nationality Act to ensure Chinese nationals married to Taiwanese can participate in politics, given they are eligible in accordance with cross-strait laws. DPP Lawmaker Rosalia Wu has opposed such an amendment, saying that the change would give Chinese spouses special privileges, and would open the door to Chinese interference in Taiwan politics. Meanwhile, Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen says elected officials and representatives must pledge allegiance to the ROC.
