Drivers perplexed by sharing road with moving temple roof

2026-01-27

Some motorists lately were surprised to be sharing the road with a temple. Spanning two lanes, they said it was like a moving castle. Turn out it was a portion of a temple being transported from a factory in Pingtung’s Nanzhou Township. After constructing the roof, it was moved in pieces to its final location in Hsinchu. Just to assemble this 66 square meter temple costs NT$5 million.

This motorist thought his eyes were deceiving him. How was there an entire temple on the road just ahead, taking up two lanes? Was it a magical moving castle?

It was my first time seeing something like this. It had flashing lights and a car behind for safety.

You don’t often see a vehicle taking up two lanes. It’s dangerous to overtake.

A business that specializes in building temples in Pingtung’s Nanzhou Township was moving a prefabricated roof to its final location in Hsinchu.

The business, touted as Asia’s largest temple factory, has many shrines and statues displayed outside. The footage captured this time was for a temple in Hsinchu, which placed an order to transport partially finished sections of roof north to the temple on a flatbed truck to be assembled on-site. It apparently costs NT$5 million to assemble this small 66 square meter temple. The truck must drive slowly, taking about two days to reach its destination.

The company also assembled Shunlong Temple in Liuqiu, prefabricating parts and shipping them over in batches. It typically costs millions to build these modular temples. They’re certainly a sight to behold while on the road.
