Taiwan’s first sightseeing park with tethered balloon opens in Nantou

Jiujiufeng Helium Balloon Park had a soft opening on Wednesday. It’s the only place in Taiwan, and the third in Asia, that offers sightseeing from a tethered helium balloon. Under stable conditions, the balloon can carry up to 30 passengers to a maximum altitude of 300m. Local residents of Nantou can sign up to ride the balloon over the soft opening period, and take in the stunning mountains view from above.

As the helium-filled balloon rises, breathtaking views of verdant mountains unfold for your enjoyment.

Jiujiufeng Helium Balloon Park, located in Nantou’s Caotun Township, is the first sightseeing park in Taiwan with a tethered balloon. The balloon has a volume of 6,000 cubic meters and can reach a height of 300m. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view over Jiujiufeng from above.

In order to afford all our friends a better view of Jiujiufeng, we’ve especially commissioned this helium balloon from France into our park. There will be a trial run for all our local friends.

The view changes on the way up. The balloon is secured with a cable and controlled via a winch house on the ground, making safety a feature of this gondola-like device in the air. The county government also plans to expand balloon operations into the evening hours.

In the future, we will consider launching trial runs in the evening. I believe that nighttime offers more than the beautiful scenery of Jiujiufeng. The views of all around Nantou County must be really wonderful, too.

The world-class balloon offers visitors to Nantou a remarkable upgrade in experience. It’s also set to become a new landmark attraction of the county.

南投縣九九峰氦氣球樂園，在11日正式試營運，是全台唯一，全亞洲唯3的氦氣球主題樂園，氦氣球在風速穩定的情況下，最多可以搭乘30人，最高升到300公尺高空，從高空俯瞰九九峰周邊的山巒美景。

氦氣球緩緩升空，翠綠的山巒景致，通通盡收眼底。

草屯九九峰氦氣球樂園，是全台首座繫留式氦氣球景觀樂園，球體規模達6000立方公尺，最多可以搭乘30人，升到300公尺高空，俯瞰九九峰周邊的遼闊視野，欣賞山巒美景。

Polish Office showcases Poland in Taiwan

Although Taiwan and Poland do not maintain formal diplomatic relations, the two countries share close ties built on economic and technological cooperation, and cultural exchanges. In Taipei, the Polish representative office plays a key role in fostering these connections, regularly organizing concerts, exhibitions, and book fairs to showcase Poland’s culture. FTV reporter Stephany Yang sat down with the Polish Office’s public diplomacy and cultural affairs expert to learn more about how these initiatives are strengthening the bond between Taiwan and Poland.

Recently, Poland showcased Polish literature, poetry, and children’s books at the Taipei International Book Exhibition. Selected titles were also available in Mandarin, strengthening cultural exchanges between Taiwan and Poland.

I am very impressed by the fair itself, by the number of young people coming here. And then, by the quality of production of children’s books, for instance. They are really beautiful. And then, an important point is the openness of Taiwanese publishers for translation.

Literature is only a part of Polish culture that we promote. We are the Polish Office. We also have other events like classical music concerts, we have jazz music concerts, we have graphic designers coming to Taiwan, and different exhibitions in place in Taiwan. Not only in Taipei—we are going more far. Also to Tainan, Kaohsiung, and we even have an event in Pingtung last year.

These initiatives highlight Poland’s commitment to showcasing a wide spectrum of its culture in Taiwan, reaching audiences across the island and building bridges through art, literature, and music.

The biggest event we actually have year by year is in Daan Park. It is the Chopin Outdoor Recital where we have very beautiful performances by pianists in the Daan outdoor theater. Last year it was Wei-Ting Hsieh, a pianist from Taiwan, who performed twice in the Chopin Competition in Poland. We have plans to repeat it also this year. There is a project called One Voice. One Voice is a collaboration of Polish and Taiwanese singers who sing together. This one is in May. All of the concerts will be announced soon on our Facebook but we also have jazz musicians, including jazz star Anna Maria Jopek, coming to Taiwan this autumn.

Through these cultural exchanges, the Polish Office in Taipei hopes to continue to strengthen ties with Taiwan, creating opportunities for collaboration and appreciation across literature, music, and the arts.

Jeweler enlists help of mechanic to retrieve gold bar lost in car

A jeweler in Kaohsiung was recently counting gold nugget in his car, when one of them accidentally fell under the passenger seat and got stuck in a crevice. After searching for ages he still couldn’t find it, so he rushed over to a body shop for help. Fortunately, a mechanic was able to retrieve it in no time at all, allowing the jeweler to breathe a sigh of relief.

When cleaning a customer’s car, a mechanic shines a light down into a crevice to discover a glittering glint of gold.

It’s a gold bar wedged in the recesses of the car! He quickly called the owner over to tell him what he found.

Ah, it made me feel so much better! That day we were taking inventory of our gold in my car. One of the bars accidentally fell under the passenger’s seat and into a crack. We searched for ages and couldn’t find it. So I called a body shop in a panic.

The owner of the car is a jeweler who was doing inventory of a new batch of gold. One of the bars worth over NT$200,000 accidentally fell on the ground. He tore the car apart looking for it, but had no luck, so he called for expert help.

The customer was in a panic. He brought the car over immediately. One of those places where the client wouldn’t look or couldn’t access was where we found it. It took about five minutes.

Staff at the body shop often help people find things lost in their vehicles. With his wealth of experience, the mechanic was able to find the bar in just five minutes.

Things usually fall between the seat and the armrest. The gap there is hard to spot. Move the seat all the way back and then use a light to check if there’s anything underneath.

The jeweler can rest easy now that the gold bar was found. But he joked that if he wasn’t able to find it and resold the car someday, he’d have to include the value of the gold in its price.

Giant Moomintroll installed in Taichung for Lantern Festival

Every municipality in Taiwan is getting ready for Lantern Festival, with popular characters spreading joy all around. On Wednesday, the stars of the 2026 Central Taiwan Lantern Festival were revealed, and they’re none other than the Moomins. A 20m-tall Moomintroll now stands right against the main building of the Taichung International Convention and Exhibition Center. It appears to be looking into the building, and visitors can get up close and personal with Moomintroll from the 4th floor.

Kids are waving excitedly at a giant white creature by the window. It has a large head, round eyes but no mouth.

From an aerial view, you can see the creature in its entirety. It’s none other than Moomintroll. The placement makes it seem as though he’s looking at a mirror. Viewed from the building, Moomintroll looks like he’s curiously peering inside.

The 2026 Central Taiwan Lantern Festival is kicking off this Sunday at Taichung Central Park, starring the world-renowned and much-loved Moomin characters. Already, a 20m Moomintroll inflatable lantern was installed at the Taichung International Convention and Exhibition Center, near the park.

The hippo-like troll from Finland has his back to the street. It’s hard to look away. Referencing the widespread joke of mozzarella cheese being Moomin meat, the deputy director of Finland Trade Center jokes that Moomins aren’t to be eaten, no matter how much they resemble mozzarella.

Customer shocked to find battery inside delicious egg tarts

Egg tarts come with all sorts of fillings nowadays. Besides custard, it might contain tapioca balls or brown suger. But a customer in Kaohsiung was shocked to find something inedible in one of the egg tarts she bought from a popular fast food chain. She was putting the pastries into the microwave, when she noticed that one of them had a black lump. She tore it open and was faced with a tripple-A battery. Good thing she discovered the battery before turning on the microwave, or it could have let to something serious.

Crispy pastry stuffed with a decadent custard filling. Yum! A customer was about to heat up a box of these egg tarts in the microwave, when she discovered a battery inside one of them.

- Wouldn’t it be dangerous to reheat them in the microwave?
- Yes! It would explode!

- The battery would explode. Unbelievable!
How were they made? How did it end up there?

People can’t believe their eyes. The customer found an AAA battery inside the egg tarts bought at a popular fast food chain store in Kaohsiung’s Nanzih District. She says she noticed a black spot in the base of the tart, and even asked the server if it was a black sugar mochi tart. She was feeling peckish so she went to have a bite without heating it in the microwave. That’s when she found the battery.

- They must make these tarts in batches.
The battery must have fallen in then and nobody noticed.

The story has been hotly debated online. But a former worker at the fast food store questioned its veracity, saying that the battery surely would’ve swollen or exploded when the tarts were first baked in the oven. A physicist says carbon-zinc batteries can leak and get deformed at 70°C.

At most, the chemicals inside carbon-zinc batteries would leak out. At more than 70°C, they could deform.

Health authorities have inspected the store, while the operator has said the incident may have been caused by an oversight at the outlet. Though not exactly an apology, the shop says it will contact the customer affected.
