KMT lawmaker suggests foreign minister to call Seoul by old name

KMT lawmaker suggests foreign minister to call Seoul by old name

2026-03-19

And the spat over Taiwan’s name on South Korea’s e-Arrival cards continues. The country currently lists Taiwan as “China (Taiwan),” a designation that has prompted protests from Taipei. In retaliation, Taiwan effected a name change for South Korean residents with ARCs. Now, the country section on the resident certificates say “South Korea” instead of “Republic of Korea” in Mandarin. Officials say the change could be extended to Taiwan’s own e-Arrival cards if South Korea doesn’t make amends by March 31. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung says that he now refers to the Republic of Korea as South Korea, but a KMT lawmaker says Taiwan could go further. Let’s hear more.

Lin Chia-lung
Foreign Minister
South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that they will take the matter seriously and consider options. We are waiting for their response and any further negotiations.

Lai Shyh-bao
Lawmaker (KMT)
They are OK with being referred to as South Korea. Just look.

Lin Chia-lung
Foreign Minister
Some 10 years ago, they were begging and pleading not to be called South Korea. They wanted to be called Republic of Korea, or just Korea for short.

Lai Shyh-bao
Lawmaker (KMT)
You could go a step further, and use Hanseong to refer to Seoul. That would irritate them more.

Seoul was known as Hanseong during the Joseon era, when Korea was a tributary state to China’s Ming and Qing Dynasties. The city got its current name after World War II, and later chosen its official Hanja characters for Chinese-language contexts in 2005. As for the naming of the country, in 2008, South Korea’s representative office requested to be referred to as Republic of Korea and not South Korea in Mandarin.
