Invasive bird species builds nests on traffic lights

Most people wouldn’t want to live anywhere near busy traffic, but some birds don’t seem to mind. In Keelung’s Qidu District, the invasive common myna is increasingly building nets right atop of traffic lights. But why? Turns out, it’s because of environmental changes and comfortable heat emitted by the traffic lights.
Bird nests sit atop of traffic lights. It’s become a peculiar but increasingly common sight in Qidu District, in Keelung, due to environmental changes and suitable heat from the lights.

The nests are successful this year. They’re not always successful, like last time when there was a typhoon.
It’s currently the breeding season for common mynas, an invasive species. These hardy birds have set up their nests, built with collected twigs, right atop traffic lights. Another species, the black-collared starling, also did the same.

It’s currently the breeding season for mynas, and they are building nests on the signal lights. In addition to the advantage of elevation, the signal lights also provide warmth, which helps with incubation.

The nests are becoming more common. For that we are closely following up with the Animal Protection Office.
This peculiar sight appeared on a traffic light on Junxian Road in Qidu. Even though the nests do not compromise the traffic lights and young birds will eventually leave after hatching, the relevant authorities must still find a way to deter the common myna’s invasion of traffic lights.

基隆七堵奇景! 八哥鳥在號誌燈上築巢原因曝光了

基隆七堵一帶地區，最近有民眾發現，有好幾隻鳥在一整排紅綠燈號誌上築巢，這種鳥叫八哥，原來是因為環境因素，改變了鳥的棲息地，因為紅綠燈號誌上有溫度吸引了八哥鳥在上面聚集築巢。
不只一個紅綠燈號誌，有鳥在上面築巢，原來是因為大環境的改變，加上號誌燈座有適當的溫度就變成了八哥築巢的地方，成了七堵當地特殊景象。

“牠今年做的(巢)成功，可是有的沒有成功，上次颱風來，就沒有成功。”
這種八哥是外來種，目前正值繁殖季節，牠們有極強的適應力，直接就把樹枝叼上號誌燈上，搭起了產房。另外還有一種鳥叫烏領椋鳥，同樣在號誌燈上築巢。

“目前是屬於八哥繁殖期，在號誌燈上進行築巢，目前除了有地形上的優勢，號誌燈也提供溫度，也有助於孵蛋。”

“築巢狀況有增加，這一方面我們也跟動保處做密切聯繫。”
這樣特殊的景象 出現在七堵俊賢路的號誌燈上，雖然不影響號誌，小鳥孵化完成後也會自然離開，但相關單位還是得想辦法，別讓這些外來客，老是這麼霸佔紅綠燈。
