Taiwanese-American astronaut gifts NASA badge to baker from Taichung

Kjell Norwood Lindgren, the world’s first Taiwanese-American astronaut is visiting Taiwan, revisiting places from his childhood. Lindgren was born in Taipei to a Taiwanese mother and a Swedish-American father, then a military officer for the US in Taichung. That’s where he spent the first three years of his life. On Thursday he visited the city, and paid a visit to Liu’s Bakery, which was the bakery that invented Taiwan’s ever-popular Apple Bread. There, he presented the 101-year-old-founder with an official NASA badge for providing bread delivery services to the US officers in Taiwan back in the day. Let’s hear more.

Lindgren holds a doctorate of medicine from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and a bachelor’s degree from the US Air Force Academy. He first served as a surgeon in NASA, and in 2009 was officially selected to be trained as an astronaut. Since then, he has been at the International Space Station twice, and has tallied a total of 311 days in space. He’s completed two space walks and even experimented with growing lettuce on the space station.

美國首位台裔太空人林琪兒，這幾天訪台，他在台北出生，母親是台灣人，爸爸是瑞典裔美軍，曾在台中駐守。林琪兒週四來到三歲以前待過的台中，特地造訪蘋果麵包起源地，劉麵包廠參訪，致贈NASA徽章，感謝高齡101歲的創辦人劉哲基，過去提供麵包外送服務給美軍。

林琪兒擁有科羅拉多大學醫學博士、美國空軍官校學士，先在NASA當航空醫官，2009年正式入選NASA太空人。著名的太空經歷包括，兩度登上國際太空站，累計在太空時間達311天，完成兩次太空漫步，還在太空站實驗種萵苣。
