Great food, fun games and a nostalgic stage play at 2026 Longgang festival

Taoyuan’s highly anticipated annual event had kicked off on Saturday. It’s the 2026 Longgang Rice Noodle Festival, which was inaugurated to celebrate the township’s heritage originating from the border region between South East Asia and Yunnan, China. On top of a wide array of delicacies to try out, this year’s edition added a stage play about the township’s former military dependent villages, as well as a group game. Visit Longgang this weekend for all the festival has to offer.

Led by Mayor Chang San-cheng, and dressed in traditional clothing, the troupe carries out a water-splashing ceremony for cleansing and blessings, to kick off the 2026 Longgang Rice Noodle Festival.

They march along to the beat of Klong yao long drums, donning costumes inspired by auspicious animals, such as the peacock and the Asian elk. The multicultural region on border of South East Asia and Yunnan, China once again takes the spotlight in Taoyuan.

A Korean ramen chef from Gumi, South Korea is offering free tastings of noodles. That’s one of the many international bites on offer at Yunnan Cultural Park. You can find many other regional specialties here, including migan noodles, Burmese coffee and sour papaya baked cheese desserts, and more.

It’s a delight of all senses. There’s coriander and veggies.

Our ramen factory is in Gumi. Topping it off with kimchi and beef makes for a refreshing and delicious treat.

There’s also a group game with 300 participants between Team Blue and Team White, after the color of bibs preschoolers used to wear in older days. More than a feast, it’s also a festival of fun.

We’ve turned the Longgang Rice Noodle Festival into an international event. Today, we’ve invited partner nations including Mongolia, Hungary, Lithuania and others. We also have a stall from our sister city, Gumi, Korea, for cuisine exchanges. At Longgang Playground, we also have a large-scale stage production on former villages in Longgang from veteran producer Wang Wei-zhong.

Representatives from five countries in Taiwan are attending the opening event of Longgang Rice Noodle Festival. With a storied past, great food and cultural exchanges, the two-week festival is not to be missed.

桃園年度盛事，2026龍岡米干節，週六盛大登場，以潑水祈福、迎賓踩街揭開序幕，雲南文化公園也聚集各國美食攤位，今年更首度融入大型藝術展演，推出舞台劇、團康遊戲等，邀請民眾走進龍岡，感受獨特異域文化。

桃園市長張善政，穿著民族服飾，沿街跟民眾互相潑水，象徵潔淨與祝福，2026龍岡米干節正式揭開序幕。

一邊敲鑼打鼓、一邊表演，現場安排象徵吉祥的孔雀、守護意象的馬鹿，以及節奏鮮明的象腳鼓樂隊，組成迎賓踩街隊伍，融合雲南、緬甸、泰國等金三角多元文化特色。

請來韓國龜尾市的拉麵主廚，煮出特色拉麵免費試吃，雲南文化公園聚集各國美食攤位，包括米干、緬甸咖啡、乳扇一口酥等，多樣異國小吃應有盡有，要讓民眾大飽口福。

Archer destroys tree trunk for practice, New Taipei looking for perpetrator

Someone along the Sanchong riverbank in New Taipei recently noticed an archer using a bow and arrows to shoot a tree, leaving the entire trunk riddled with holes. The High Riverbank Construction Management Office warned that this kind of behavior is illegal and could even constitute public endangerment, urging the culprit to stop immediately.

This banyan tree along the riverbank appears to be lush and green, but if you look closer, you can see its trunk is riddled with holes.

People online wondered if it was due to insects or disease, or maybe even woodpeckers. But a witness confirmed seeing someone with a bow and arrows using the tree for target practice.

We went to take a look for ourselves, and found there aren’t any CCTV cameras around. The culprit likely took advantage of this blind spot for target practice, leaving the trunk full of holes.

Everyone who’s seen this tree along the riverbank in Sanchong District has been left aghast by the bad behavior. Even a researcher who’s spent years studying and saving trees said this is a first for him.

This is the first time I’ve seen a tree abused like this. Its trunk is in tatters. Each hole is a wound that invites fungi and insects, which could lead to rot. It’s a severe injury to the tree. If it keeps going like this and it loses its bark, it could kill the tree.

This likely violates the city ordinance against damaging trees, as well as the Social Order Maintenance Act for possessing dangerous equipment. If a bow and arrow are considered a firearm, which are controlled by law, it could even constitute endangering public safety under the Criminal Code.

Now this clandestine archer is in the crosshairs of the authorities, as they’re looking to bring the tree slayer of Sanchong to justice.

Leaders urge amendments to expand penalties for CCP-sympathizing veterans

Retired Navy Major Lu Li-shih has again, made a pro-Beijing, triggering debate in Taiwan. This time, he expressed his views for while touring a naval ship in Qingdao, China, that was open to the public for the PLA Navy’s 77th anniversary. His conduct was condemned by the Veterans Affairs Council, the Mainland Affairs Council and Defense Minister Wellington Koo, and prompted called to amend relevant laws that would hold him accountable, which currently do not apply to him due to his relatively lower rank.

Retired Navy Major Lu Li-shih recently toured a PLA naval ship in Qingdao, China, open to the public for the PLA Navy’s 77th anniversary. What he said triggered much debate in Taiwan.

Because the two sides of the strait are one family, a strong motherland means Taiwan is safe.

The Veterans Affairs Council later issued a statement condemning Lu’s pro-Beijing remarks, saying that his speech was tantamount to a betrayal to the country, its military and its people. The statement also backed legal amendments that would hold him accountable, which Defense Minister Wellington Koo also supports.

He’s fallen to become a tool for CCP united front efforts. He’s spoken on behalf of the enemy, making inappropriate remarks out of gleeful contempt, which we found heartbreaking and utterly despicable. Through these amendments, there will be a mechanism to deal with such cases, so we urge the swift passing of these amendments.

Lu falls outside the scope of penalties for “conducts harmful to national dignity” under current relevant clauses under the Cross-Strait Act, which, for retired military officers, only apply to major generals or above. The Mainland Affairs Council wants to expand the scope to major and above at the bare minimum.

Legislators of the KMT and TPP should express their sincere regard for active military personnel by letting them know that when they’re hard at work defending the homeland, these pro-China and CCP-bootlicking retired officers, these hindrances, will no longer take from taxpayers. If they’re so intent on ingratiating the CCP, then let the CCP feed and clothe them instead.

The DPP says that the amendments must be made swiftly so that retired military officers will no longer be used by Beijing as united front propaganda, while also enjoying benefits from Taiwan, which in turn damages the dignity of active military officers.

Taipower partners with hiking group to post trail markers on utility poles

Utility poles can do more than just deliver power. They can also help you find your way! On the 80th anniversary of its founding, Taipower partnered with the Thousand Miles Trail Association to post directional markers on utility poles along the Tamsui-Kavalan, Raknus Selu, and Mountains to Sea trails. There’s even a secret code to remember if you’re lost, so hikers can hit the trail with peace of mind.

Taipower is adding additional utility to their ubiquitous utility poles by helping hikers find their way. They’ve already posted 80 markers along the Tamsui-Kavalan, Raknus Selu, and Mountains to Sea trails.

When cell service is unreliable deep in the mountains, trail markers are still necessary for hikers exploring these paths to find their way home.

Manual labor is required to bring electricity to mountainous areas. Children at the event got to experience the work firsthand by helping to carry 60 meters of cable weighing 250 kilograms to a newly marked pole. If you look closer, you’ll also see a navigational code. Each pole has a unique ID that gives an exact location when used with a navigational system. The Taipower chair shared a little secret to using the codes.

Each pole has a Taipower logo. Under it, there’s the name of the pole and its identification number. Now remember, if you want to walk back to the city, follow the poles in descending order.

At the bottom there’s an alphanumeric code. Those are the Taipower coordinates. If you search “Taipower utility pole location” on Google, it can convert the code into longitude and latitude. People have even developed tools to pinpoint your exact location by using the codes.

These humble utility poles are doing double duty by serving as a secret GPS, helping hikers explore the great outdoors without fear of getting lost.

Entertainer William Shen shares cancer treatment journey

Host, producer, and comedian William Shen returned to TV last month after recovering from leukemia. He was invited to serve as Taiwan’s blood cancer awareness ambassador and share his seven-month battle with the disease, including multiple rounds of chemotherapy. Together with his doctor, they highlighted four warning signs that could indicate blood cancer, urging the public to stay alert.

Honestly, the chemotherapy was just those five days, but the side effects? My hemorrhoids swelled up so much because of the side effects that going to the bathroom, which should be a simple thing, became incredibly stressful every day.

Shen went through five rounds of chemotherapy during his treatment. Even before he was diagnosed with leukemia last year, Shen recalled feeling easily fatigued, a warning sign that something was wrong.

I was so exhausted that I couldn’t muster the energy to walk from the stairs on one side of the stage to the stairs on the other side. I could barely make it. If you’re feeling that kind of extreme exhaustion, it’s probably not ordinary chronic fatigue.

There are about 1,000 new cases of acute myeloid leukemia in Taiwan each year. Although it’s less common than lung, liver, or colorectal cancers, it tends to be very aggressive and has a major impact on patients.

The doctor explained blood cancer’s four key symptoms: extreme fatigue, unexplained fever, unusual bruising, and bone pain, and urged people to seek medical attention if they experience such symptoms. Shen returned to work last month and is scheduled to film shows on location in the second half of the year, if his body can handle it.

We’re scheduled to film outdoors in June, but because of my condition, the content is more relaxed. Before, participants would play games in the mountains and sea, and sometimes the host would have to join in. But now, looking at the plans, it’s more like eating, drinking, and relaxing. I’ll manage my energy and see how I feel, and of course I won’t push myself too hard.

As he returns to his daily life and regularly scheduled programming, Shen is also raising awareness about blood cancer, sharing his personal experience to support public health.

A coffee shop in Kaohsiung has gone viral for its intricate 3D latte art. Over 14 years, the owner has made anything you could imagine into latte art, from pets to deities and movie characters. Ask, and you shall receive, even if it’s a cockroach. The owner delivered above expectations with a lifelike foam cockroach that jiggles when you move the cup. The equally delightful and disturbing creation has gone viral and received multiple requests, even with a NT$1,500 price tag.

First, create the shape with microfoam. Then, sketch with chocolate syrup. Finish with dustings of coffee powder. All these layers make for a realistic-looking result.

Give this cockroach latte art a tiny shake, and it looks as though it might take flight.

Loyal pet dog alerts neighbors after owner falls down stairs

And a story from Keelung once again proves why dogs are man’s best friend. Last Friday, a woman in the city was heading home up a long flight of stairs when she suddenly collapsed and hit her head against the ground. Her beloved dog immediately leapt to action, barking loudly to alert neighbors in the area. The dog stayed by her side until someone finally came to the rescue and called the police and medical services. The woman was quickly sent to the hospital to get a checkup and was not in a life-threatening condition, thanks to her loyal pet.

A brown dog refuses to leave the woman alone. She was going up the stairs when she fell and hit her head. Paramedics found her lying motionless on the steps with the dog. They quickly checked her injuries and helped her up.

The woman wasn’t too keen on seeing a doctor, but after some persuasion from the paramedic, she accepted and went down the stairs to be taken to the hospital. Her rescue was so quick thanks to her dog.

The fall happened at a hillside staircase in Keelung last Friday. The dog that alerted neighbors was the woman’s mixed-breed pet of seven years. The woman says she suddenly felt dizzy and collapsed on her way home due to exhaustion. Her dog noticed something was off and barked for help until a nearby resident called the police.

The woman was fortunately not in mortal danger after being taken to the hospital. Locals say her loyal dog is always nearby and in this case, its alertness saved a life, becoming a local hero.
