Two baby tawny fish owls have become the stars of a new nature livestream documenting their early days in the world. Earlier in April, park rangers and university researchers spotted traces of the bird along the Qyawan [KYA-wan] Creek in the mountains of the Shei-Pa National Park. The team tracked down the owls, which are a Class II protected animal species in Taiwan. They eventually found the nest, which had not just one but two fluffy owl babies. Their upbringing is now being documented via a livestream. Let’s hear more.

We captured a male tawny fish owl, which is Taiwan’s largest owl, along the Qyawan Creek in Wuling. Using satellite positioning, we located its breeding nest and found two chicks inside. The nest was on an old magnolia compressa tree, which had a trunk diameter of about 1.5m. The tree is hollow, and there is a natural groove at the base of the branch node that’s filled with humus and ferns, which creates a safe and stable nursery up in the air.
The nest has set a new record for the highest known breeding altitude for tawny fish owls in Taiwan, at an elevation of 1,800m. Researchers have also confirmed that the mother owl had been previously tracked and released 10 years ago by the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology. One decade later, the owl has made a public appearance once again with a family, showing her attachment and dependence on her habitat.
