The Jun Shan, a very large crude carrier operated by Formosa Plastics Marine, has finally reached Taiwan. The oil tanker was lucky to pass through the Strait of Hormuz in mid-April during a temporary pause in the US-Iran conflict. After more than a month at sea, the vessel finally entered Mailiao Port at around 12:50 p.m. on Thursday and officially docked at 1:30 p.m. Let’s hear more.
Voice of Lin Ko-yen
Formosa Petrochemical President
I want to thank the ship owner, our colleagues at Formosa Plastics Marine Corp., for all their hard work. Of course, the cargo belongs to us, but in reality, they are the ones operating the ship. Their efforts were crucial, and honestly, we were also quite lucky. Just as the strait was announced to be reopening, the ship happened to be right near the exit point of the Strait of Hormuz, allowing it to follow other vessels out safely.
Iran imposed a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this year, after the US and Israel launched an attack on the country. The strait is a critical artery for the world’s oil supply. The Jun Shan, was able to make a risky breakthrough during a reopening, becoming one of a small number of vessels that were able to get out. The carrier is 333m long, and carries 2 million barrels of crude oil. The shipment is expected to help cover roughly half a month of Taiwan’s domestic oil consumption.
