Taichung dessert shop offers shaved ice with Chinese herbs

While Chinese medicinal herbs are often used in savory soups, one famous dessert shop in Taichung uses them in shaved ice. Inspired by traditional Taiwanese four herb soup, the shop offers a shaved ice flavor that combines five different herbs. Its unique taste has attracted many customers over the years.

Rolling the dough with their hands, a chef uses their fingers to slice it into small tangyuan, or sticky rice balls, which go directly into a boiling pot.

The rice balls are served in a bowl of warm red bean soup to complete this sweet dessert. But this restaurant is known for more than just this dish.

This time, the chef puts mung beans, malva nut, lily bulbs, millet, and agar jelly into a bowl and tops it with shaved ice, creating a dessert with traditional Chinese herbs.

As Chinese herbs are usually used in savory soups, this unique dessert has attracted many customers.

Today I got the four herbs shaved ice. I think the decor is pretty unique. It feels retro to enjoy dessert on the sidewalk.

This dessert shop has been running for over 100 years and has been passed down through three generations. It still uses the original furniture, traditional syrup pots, and trusted techniques.

The first generation’s photo is over there, and the second generation’s is behind it. I’m the third generation. It’s hard inheriting a business. It’s exhausting, and you have to follow each step. You can’t cut corners, or longtime customers will notice the difference the moment they taste it.

The flavors here at this dessert shop have been consistent for over 100 years. Its unique four herb shaved ice is nutritious, delicious, and a favorite of many longtime customers.

甜的四神湯!? 台中百年冰店"四神冰"口味超特殊

你以為中藥只能做成溫補燉湯嗎?在台中,就有一家百年歷史冰店,裡頭販賣了一項特殊口味,"四神冰",有涼的當然也有熱的,冬天還能來上一碗熱騰騰的甜四神湯,不過有別於一般四神湯藥材,裡面有百合、膨大海、洋菜等五種配料,獨一無二的口味,累積不少忠實顧客。

拿起麵團,搓成長條形,直接用手指切,白色小湯圓,撲通撲通掉進大鍋裡。

撈起湯圓倒進碗裡,加入熱騰騰紅豆湯,香甜紅豆湯圓馬上上桌,不過店內招牌,可不只有它

綠豆、澎大海、百合、薏仁、洋菜凍,通通加入碗裡,走到屋內,復古挫冰機,擺上大冰塊,高速旋轉,全台獨一無二的四神冰,出爐了。

降火口味又特殊的四神冰,吸引許多饕客,前來品嘗。

“我今天點的就是四神,我是覺得他裝潢蠻特別的,在騎樓邊就可以有,吃甜食復古的感覺”

1938年,台中第二市場重建完成,而這家冰店,早在這之前,就已經創店營業,距今已經超過百年歷史,傳承3代的,除了有店裡坐椅,用來裝糖漿的鹽甕,還有老手藝。

“第一代照片在那邊,第二代在後面,我是第三代,傳承工作很累,很繁瑣,你要按部就班做,你不能偷工減料,偷工減料的話,老顧客一吃就知道跑味了”

承載的百年歷史的冰店,祖傳三代,製作過程一步都不可輕忽,這碗四神冰,吃的是養身,是美味,也是無法取代的記憶。
