Kaohsiung has had a wet August. In fact, it was so rainy that 1931 was the last time Kaohsiung had this much rain in a single month. Starting Aug. 19, 13 days of wicked wet weather has made life difficult for both urban and rural areas, with trees and roadside slopes crashing down onto streets and new waterfalls being formed on mountains. Let’s see some of the footage.
In Kaohsiung, where rain is refusing to let up, this white car comes to a stop at the traffic light. The leaning roadside tree starts sagging even more, suddenly falling onto the car. The frightened scooter rider gets away from the tree, which didn’t injure the driver inside the car.
- How’d that happen? I thought something man-made had fallen down.
This close call happened a little after 6 am on Sept. 1 in Cianjhen District, at the intersection of Baotai Rd. and Gongzheng Rd. The falling tree incident did have two inanimate victims: in addition to the car that had stopped at the red light, a SUV parked on the roadside had its hood crushed by the tree trunk.

The constant rain during the last few days loosened the soil, which led to the tree toppling over.
Day after day of pouring rain created a fierce waterfall on Shoushan. Part of a slope bordering Highway 20 came crumbling down onto the pavement. In Jiaxian, on Sept. 1, starting at 9 in the morning, this road was closed until the completion of repair work, which took over an hour.
Torrential rain that started late at night soaked the hiking trail on Shoushan. From this angle, the water rushing down next to these steps looked like a surging stream.
Some of the drainage system is clogged, causing yellowish muddy water that makes the already wet pavement even more slippery.
People are wondering if the rainy weather is ever going to take a break. According to data from the Kaohsiung Weather Station, several monthly precipitation records were broken this August, such as there being 18 total days with rain, and starting on Aug. 19 there were 13 days of consecutive rain. In Augusts of the past, Kaohsiung averaged 450mm of precipitation, but the total figure for this year’s eighth month is almost quadruple the average. Annually, Kaohsiung receives 1,839mm of rainfall on average, meaning the 1,712mm in August is essentially enough rain for one year.

The total rain this August may rival annual averages, yet, unfortunately for Kaohsiung, September is here but the rain hasn’t gone away, so all people can do is hope that mother nature doesn’t produce another disaster.

高雄大雨持續下不停，早上六點多，在前鎮區發生路樹倒塌意外，砸毀兩輛轎車，另外在柴山，也出現瀑布。根據統計，高雄光8月，一個月的降雨量，就高達1712毫米，破紀錄，是往年8月雨量近4倍，甚至已經逼近年平均降雨量。
大雨下停不，一輛白色轎車，開到路口停等紅燈，一旁路樹開始傾斜，接著竟然直接往車上砸，前方騎士嚇到趕快往前騎，還好轎車車主沒受傷。

事發在前鎮區保泰路與公正路口，1號早上6點多，路樹倒塌，兩車遭砸中，原本停在路旁車格的轎車，車頭被壓毀。

“因近日連續下雨，導致土壤鬆軟而倒塌。”
連日豪雨，柴山也出現瀑布了，水勢磅礡而下。台20線桃源路段，邊坡也因為大雨關係，出現坍方，南分局甲仙工務段1號上午9點開始，實施道路封閉，現場搶修一個多小時後，順利通車。
高雄從深夜開始陣陣強降雨，壽山步道旁，雨水不停沖刷，水勢湍急，就像滾滾溪流一般，不停往下沖。
也因為部分排水溝堵塞，導致整條道路都是黃泥土水，路面相當濕滑。
大雨一直下，民眾都想問，到底有完沒完。根據高雄氣象站資料顯示，8月降雨量已破多項紀錄，像是整個月降雨日達18天，從8/19開始，已連續下雨13天。而過往8月平均雨量落在450毫米，但今年8月累積雨量，已將近4倍多。若以每年平均雨量1839毫米來看，今年光8月一個月就有1712毫米，非常驚人。

幾乎光八月就下了將近一整年的雨，但九月開始，雨還沒下完，只希望別再傳出災情。
