Huge 7m sinkhole appears on busy Kaohsiung street

2026-09-02

A massive sinkhole suddenly opened up in Kaohsiung’s Nanzih District this afternoon, scaring passing motorists and pedestrians. Police were immediately called to the scene, where they placed traffic cones around the area to keep road users out of danger.

The sinkhole appeared in the middle of Qionglin 3rd Street. It measures more than 7m in diameter and is around 3m wide. With a depth of 1 to 2m, from a distance it looks like a bottomless pit. Authorities rushed to the scene to assess what caused the subsidence. They suspect the recent heavy rains may have washed away the soil underneath the road, causing the ground to cave in. People passing through the area are advised to be vigilant.
