Fearing traffic jams and long lines, many airline travelers like to arrive early to drop their bags and browse the duty-free shops at their leisure. But how come oftentimes, even when you drop your bag early, it takes ages to show up at baggage claim? Does checking in earlier mean a longer wait on the other side?

Responding to a discussion on social media about whether the phenomena is real, an airport insider said not necessarily. After it’s dropped, the luggage still needs to pass security before being scanned and routed to the handling area for the corresponding flight. From there, they’re sorted by priority, such as elite status, transit baggage, and standard checked bags.

So it actually depends on the ground crew’s workflow and task allocation. For instance, priority tags for frequent flyers, business class, or first class passengers usually go onto the carousel first. Connecting transit luggage is also processed with the priority bags.

When your bags come out depends on sorting and operational workflow. Simply speaking, for most passengers, when you get your bag is mostly a matter of pure luck.
