Taiwan shares plummet by 4.51% to end day below 40,000-point mark

Taiwan shares saw their biggest ever intraday drop on Friday. The Taiex plummeted by a whopping 3,737 points during the trading session, pushing the index below the 12-month moving average. Even bellwether stocks such as TSMC hit limit-down. Though bargain hunters stepped in and eased the selling pressure, the market still closed with losses across the board. Taiwan shares ended the day down 1,873 points or 4.51%, falling below the 40,000-point mark. TSMC shares also closed down, at N$2,135, or 4.69%. Taiwan shares have been on a downward slope for six days now, accumulating almost 5,500 points in losses. The president and the premier weighed in on the matter. Let’s hear from them.

The mid-term elections in the US have just wrapped up, and that has created a new political landscape. A reaction from financial markets is to be expected. The world is entering the era of AI. That’s something that won’t change, which means that Taiwan’s tech industry will continue to develop. That’s what we can expect. I urge everyone to not panic because of these changes in the market.

This morning I instructed the Financial Supervisory Commission to monitor developments in international and domestic markets.
Only last month, Taiwan shares hit a record high of 49,968 points on Oct. 6. Since then, the market has plunged 20.55%. With investor confidence shaken, the government’s NT$500 billion National Stabilization Fund is now on standby, should it need to shore up the market next week. If so, it will mark the fund’s 10th intervention since its establishment in 2000. Except for its first intervention, which ended in losses, the fund has recorded gains and exited the market profitably eight times.

台股周五盤中狂瀉3737點，創史上最大盤中跌點，還一度摜破年線，權王台積電更是罕見觸及跌停，隨後雖然出現買盤承接，但終場還是綠油油，台股重挫1873點，跌幅4.51%，失守4萬點，也是收盤史上第四大跌點。台積電最終收在2135元，跌幅4.69%。算算台股已經連續跌了6天，跌了將近5500點，也讓總統和行政院長出面，接力信心喊話。

距離10月6日創下的歷史最高點紀錄49968點，台股僅僅一個月就跌掉了20.55%，面對投資信心重挫，國安基金5000億資金上膛，下周將進場護盤，這是國安基金自2000年以來，啟動的第10度護盤任務，回顧國安基金前9次護盤紀錄，除了第一次出手失敗，之後已經連續8次獲利退場。
